Breaking the Eucharistic fast?

One Sunday last year, I was on my way to Mass after work and decided to eat something (it was less than 1 hour before I would receive the Eucharist). At the time I was not aware of the seriousness of observing the 1 hour fast; I had thought it was more of an optional observance, as I had never been formally taught about it. Did I commit a mortal sin in not observing the fast?

Correct. If you have to come here and ask if something is a mortal sin, it is probably not (at least not for you).

jUst as a suggestion, you might want to pick up a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. copies are available in paperback for a reasonable sum, and they will answer questions such as this, and others.
