Breast Feeding During Mass?

I think I can help explain this, as I do nurse a 15 mo at Mass…
You are nursing a 15 mo? When a child gets to be that age, I am wondering who is liking it more…you or the child.

I find it ironic that the originator of this thread has this quote in her signature

*“The greatness and moral progress of a nation can be judged by how its animals are treated.”

Mahatma Gandhi *

What about encouraging compassionate treatment of human babies? You should be glad that they are getting the milk of human kindness by a loving mother. I’m so happy whenever I see a wee babe suckling at the breast. There’s nothing like new life, innocent and helpless, being tended to by a woman in the fullness of womanhood. That woman is mirroring our mother in Heaven, the Virgin of Virgins. Our Church is prolife, and we should be encouraging parents in everyway, not condemning and being shocked at mothers suckling their babes.

Many old paintings of the Madonna show her suckling baby Jesus. That’s because it’s a beautiful sight.
How nice you noticed my signature…maybe you will like my new one too.

Winters are cold here too and my children never went hungry and No I didn’t breast feed them in public. I never sat in a BR stall nor a cold car…I used a supplemental bottle when we had to be out and I breast fed in private…certainly would have never thought about doing it in church.🙂 …which leads me to believe that some might be exhibitionists (incognito)

Not everyone can use a bottle. My son won’t take a bottle at all now, he screams his head off because he wants the breast. I guess I could try to train him now that he’s six months old for the purpose of feeding him in public if I have to, but I really don’t feel like it should be such a huge problem for others to see such a thing as a woman breastfeed a baby. Not only that, I feel it’s extremely rude for someone to gawk at a woman who is breastfeeding her baby.

Are you insinuating an impure motive here?

I’m not trying to prove anything to anyone, and I’d really rather people did not look. I had a difficult enough of a time learning how to breastfeed, dealing with bleeding nipples and nursing every 20 minutes in the first month and a half to be accused of “liking” breastfeeding. There are some things I like, such as the absence of dirty bottles in the kitchen sink, and not having to use that ridiculous pump, and not having do deal with baby vomit because the supplemental formula doesn’t sit well in his tummy. If you’re insinuating an impure motive, that’s reprehensible, and astonishing.

All I can say is       !!!

It is people like this EXACTLY that are oversexualizing nursing!!!

Thank you for proving my point, blyssful.

Oh, my goodness!!

Nursing = nutrition. You ARE aware that some moms even nurse to age 2, 3, and beyond, much for emotional nourishment of the child, correct??

Anyone who thinks a nursing mom is getting sexual gratrification from her nursing infant or TODDLER is really disturbed.

The media has sexualized the breast and that is where the problem is. Not the young mother trying to feed her infant. I had 5 children oldest was 7 when #5 was born, There was no way I was going to hide out in some stall somewhere or empty classroom. To each her own, but don’t chastise me or anyone else for feeding our babies the way God intended.

BTW DS#4 breastfed till he was 19 months. The rest were around 10-13 months:)

MY children wouldn’t take bottles or pacifiers. So, I am uncertain how I am supposed to have given them a supplemental bottle.

Your profile says that you are almost my mom’s age so perhaps this is a generational thing. Women of my mom’s generation were not encouraged to breastfeed like women today are, or even women of generations before.

My grandmother-who would have been in her eighties now-breastfed all her children and was a terrific help for me when I decided to nurse. My mother, though, knew very little about the whole process.

I totally agree with you! What is wrong with people. You said what I was to upset to write

Dont be upset Kim, her remarks were rotten and uncalled for. It is people with those mentalities that make good nursing mothers look like sexual objects.

How nice of you to go to the trouble of looking up my profile.

Sorry, but I feel…IMO…that anyone who breast feeds the child to 15-19 months of age…is doing it for MORE than just the convenience etc.

Would you mind just keeping those kind of thoughts inside the privacy of your own head? Some things are just not meant for the whole world to know.

I am not taking anyone’s side on this, but just to give another point of view. When I first read Blyss’s statement, it never occurred to me that she was referring to sexual enjoyment. It wasn’t until I read the replies to her comment that then I realized the possibility.
But just to offer another option, maybe she referring to the enjoyment a mother has bonding with her child. I know I was sad when my child stopped breastfeeding. He had no desire to nurse, he demanded REAL food (solids). I did everything I could to convince him to nurse until his 1st birthday. I was really sad when I had to give that up. Maybe, just possibly, she was referring to a mother holding onto the breastfeeding in order to keep that special bond with her child. (mother wanting it more than the kiddo)

Of course, I could be wrong and Blyss meant exactly what you guys assumed. I just wanted to throw this other option out that as something to consider.

God Bless,

You know what Blyss? You’ve gone too far, waaaaaaaaaayyyy too far. Don’t even TRY to say you aren’t judging people now, like you tried backpedaling before. You ought to be able to tell by the myriad posts here that the mothers defending breastfeeding on demand are loving, devoted, and self sacrificing. Your sick insinuations are waaaayyy off base. YO, MODS, HELLLOOOOOOO!!!

REALLY?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Do you even HAVE children???

My jaw keeps hitting the floor!!

I can’t believe people can even think this way.

I can recommend some good counselors, who are even Catholic, to help you get over this horrible misconception and ill-informed mentality.

You can’t possibly have children. Not to think that way. Oh my…
