Breastfed, Homebirthed Babies Taken Away From Parents For Not Using Hospital

I am a crunchy-leaning mother. I would have (midwife assisted) home births if I did not have a history of birth complications. I homeschool and prefer to try natural remedies before resorting to pharmaceutical treatments. I nurse my babies until they’re way “too old”. I choose my doctors carefully because I don’t want misunderstandings to result in a nightmare of CPS visits for my kids and myself. Even when everything works out fine, nobody needs that kind of stress.

In my past life (pre-kids), I was a social worker for CPS.

This story sounds horrific. It sounds absolutely unreasonable. It may or may not be. CPS makes mistakes. Sometimes Social Workers have an agenda and go on witch hunts. Sometimes, they overreact for fear of liability or exposure if they make the wrong call. Sometimes, they just make a bad call. For the most part, though, CPS does not want to take children out of homes, if only for practical reasons. It creates much more work in an already overburdened system.

What I can say is that we should keep an open mind in these cases. CPS will never be able to give you the other side of the story, and there is one. CPS will never be able to say a word in its own defense. We will never know the absolute truth in this case or any other.

I just checked the Washington State Court Case site. It lists any interaction a person has had with the court system, from fighting a traffic citation to being tried for murder. No record of this gal there.

CPS cases are generally exempt from such reporting because of confidentiality concerning minors. I would imagine that the state Court Case site doesn’t include juvenille crimes, either.
 
What’s your opinion of the video? I detect something ‘off’ about the parents, but no worse than all druggie and lowlifes who have full custody of their kids.
 
I assure you, there is much, much more to this story. This couple is taking FULL advantage of the fact that all the CPS employees are bound by confidentiality, and cannot discuss this story with the media or anyone else. The children were not removed because they were born at home, or because the mother chose to breast feed. If you believe that, you are very gullible. CPS has to get a court order from a judge before they are given authority to remove any child from a parent. Including these 3 children. Ponder that.

There may be more, I agree. But you are gullible to believe that CPS workers haven’t overstepped because of their own personal prejudices. There have been many documented cases in the past. Did you view the video? I’m curious about people’s take on it.

I get the impression that the young father was rather defiant and probably escalated the situation with his attitude.

I think the couple sounds pretty flaky, but that doesn’t make them bad parents.

Still, there is another side to this story.
 
Country Gal, with all due respect, I know several of the people personally (not CPS people I assure you) who are related to this family. There is more to the story. People with no real life knowledge of any real facts in this scenario have gotten caught up in a media feeding frenzy. Speculate all you want, but don’t pretend to know the truth. You really do not.

I am not a CPS lover, or a CPS defender, but sometimes I’m disgusted at how quick people are to take the bait on these SENSATIONAL stories when you do not know all the facts.Prayers for the truth to prevail.
 
I just read on Facebook that the couple regained custody, after the hearing.
 
As a nurse, I find the allegations that CPS took the children away due to medical issues to be very suspect. Steroids are almost never the first choice for treatment of eczema in children, particularly small babies. They are usually the LAST choice because the skin is thinner in children, making them more likely to experience systemic side effects. On top of that, homebirth is not uncommon - and the parents could even have claimed that the birth just happened too fast for them to be able to go to the hospital (and who would be able to dispute that? It’s far safer to give birth in a static situation, even if it is at home, than to give birth during transport).

Based on those facts alone, even without the history of the involvement with law enforcement, I am highly suspicious.
