I’ll try this again, my first response didn’t go. The danger lies not in focusing the intent of your prayer on Jesus, or we allow it to become a “mantra” where you are to enter some blissful alpha state. It is not to lower our blood pressure or to relax (although this could certainly be a positive side effect). The intent of the Jesus Prayer or any prayer for that matter is to bring us closer to God. We all have a tendency to daydream or let our mind wander and without the proper continual intense focus to bring Jesus into our hearts, we leave ourselves vulnerable for outside influence. The idea probably doesn’t make sense to most of us who are not deeply spirtually versed, therefore it is a good idea to defer our judgement to the church fathers and someone who can act as an advisor. It certainly doesn’t mean a person should not pursue it, as it is an admorable quest, but we should also use the resources that are available to us for guidance.
