well don’t ask me we all know how ill-qualified I am to comment
It think I get most of it now excep the title.

I am at a loss to see how it fits in his message which I take to be the value of renunciation and detachment for earthly pleasures.
I think eschewing breathing for one’s spiritual benefit is a bit drastic.

are we still giving out awards for most entertaining new thread?

My reading of what he wrote is that we overindulge in the trappings of our western civilization. Things like t.v ,films, food, drink, humour, holidays, sex, mark desribed as “artifices”. Considering the dictionary definition of ‘artifice’, I think he’s on the right track. I might take out ‘humour’, but then again that depends on what people do to amuse themselves. Basically, we of the affluent west can sometimes lose sight of what should be the real priorities in life and we succumb to the wanting more of the trappings of civilisation at, perhaps, the expense of spiritual things. Not too many Catholics would disagree with that observation, methinks!

I am totally not degrading Mark. I fit into the DSM-IV too, so it is not from a condescending standpoint that I am making that observation. It is from the fact that he cannot seem to communicate much in a rational, comprehensible way, therefore most people are clueless as to what he is trying to tell us. That’s all.

Glad im not the only one…Just came off a 30 hour flight. Im still clueless…😉
 
We may abstain enough, but we are still unprofitable servants.

A Dominican priest on the “Journey Home” program on EWTN, prior to entering the order was in church praying that his considerable debts be taken care of so that he could enter the seminary. He was tapped on the shoulder and informed by the person before him that the Holy Spirit wanted him to offer financial help so that this future priest could leave immediately to the seminary. The future priest informed this person they did not know what they were saying, that the amount in question was very considerable. “Well you don’t know how much money I have” was the response.

If we make every personal effort to come to God by our actions, we may miss the anointed work God actually wants us to do. Giving all his money to be holy may have left this person unable to help when God wanted him to and not only unprofitable, but also of no use to God when needed. Union with God is holiness, not our own esoteric offerings.

You’re telling me. The first post alone was more confusing than a Lady Gaga video.

Although, someone mentioned food and coffee and how the OP seems to encourage absolute abstinence by condemning food as an “artifice”?

Well seeing as how my BMI is only one point away from being officially underweight, I can’t say that sits well with me.

I like breathing. I try to breathe every day. Most days I am successful. I shall try not to cease breathing for some time.
