Brendan was right when he wrote “most of this post is not relevant to the point of this thread” referring to the thread that we were discussing gun control on. So I started this thread, I hope that Brendan will read this as a response to his latest post in “Does the Catholic Church have a position on gun control”.
Brendan asked: Do you really want to go down that route? Do you want me to, in turn, list examples of murders (many mass murders) that have occurred in the USA from the barrels of legally held firearms? Newtown Conecticut, Santa Monica, Columbine High… Do you think the outcome of these events would have changed if these legally held guns were not available?I could go on, but if you want to play that game… In fact more murders are committed in the USA by legally held firearms than by illegally held firearms.
Annie: Yes we can go down that road. Okay, lets see:
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold bought the guns illegally In the months prior to the attacks, Harris and Klebold acquired two 9 mm firearms and two 12-gauge shotguns. A rifle and the two shotguns were bought in a straw purchase in December 1998 by a friend, Robyn Anderson Harris and Klebold later bought a handgun from a friend, Mark Manes. Manes was jailed after the massacre for the offense of selling a handgun to a minor, as was Philip Duran, who had introduced the duo to Manes.
Adam Lanza stole the guns from his mother who legally owned them. Notice, she was not the murderer but was murdered by her son using one of those guns. Thus legal guns were not used in this murder either. His mother knew her son was mentally unstable and should have had those guns locked away. We own guns and a member of our family is also unstable. Our guns are always locked away in a very strong gun safe when she visits. Her husband will not have guns in his house due to this even though he is against the gun control laws. That’s what responsible folks do.
And now on to Santa Monica BTW I was once employed in Santa Monica, California, USA.
John Zawahri “had tried to buy a gun in 2011 and was denied for unknown reasons by the state’s Department of Justice, The Los Angeles Times reports.”
He assembled his gun from parts he bought, probably on the internet. Zawahri was also a mental patient.
So, when guns are outlawed the law abiding will lose their self protection against the lawless who will keep their means of violence. When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.
You write: Yes a member of the public may well have been able to kill the murderer, but the actual attack that killed the man was very fast. What would killing the attacker after the man was dead achieve? If someone walks up to you, pulls out a machete and takes one blow at your neck at close range and without warning, then carrying a gun will not save you, unless you’ve got it in your hand at the time, with the safety catch off, and just by chance happen to be pointing it at the person who attacks you by surprise and without warning with a lethal machete blow to the neck.
Me: But if the man, who was a member of the military and no doubt trained in using weapons had been armed it is probable that there would have been a happier ending to this horrid affair IMHO.

Since the people in the UK are supportive of the strict gun control, that is their business. However I believe that a person has the right to the mean of self protection and I hope that the laws in the USA do not become more restrictive.
