Hi all:

I’m new to the traditional Breviarium Romanum and have a 1962 one, so I’m excited. I need help understanding how to pray Matins! First, I’m confused. Some of the lessons of Matins has a Gospel reading followed by a homily. Whenever that occurs, the Gospel is presented as a shortened form but there’s “et reqliqua” at the end. Do I just read what is presented in the breviary including the “et reliqua” and go right into the Homily?

I’ve seen this in Latin and English traditional breviaries and it confuses me. Then there are other occasions where the lesson is another biblical-only reading (i.e. reading from 1 Kings or whatnot) and it’s just a straight through read.

Please help me understand this. Thank you!

Just a quibble, but the 1962 Breviarum Romanum is not “traditional”. It was promulgated in the early 20th century by Pius X, and was a radical departure from the more traditional Roman Breviary from the time of Trent, which was abrogated at the same time. The Trent breviary had a less than 400 year run.

There is only one truly traditional Breviary, the Monastic Breviary, which has been around unaltered in its basic schema since the 6th century. Moreover it exists in both pre- and post-Vatican II forms, so it is the oldest breviary still in continuous use in the Church.

The 1962 breviary was only the main form of the Breviary for 60 years until the LOTH was introduced in 1970. The LOTH is now at 47 years as main breviary. Not a huge difference, so I find the “traditional” label a bit of a misnomer.

That said I can only tell you what the current post-Vatican II practice is, which is to proclaim the entire gospel at the third nocturne of Matins, followed by a homily (optional) or reading from the Church fathers.

Hi OraLabora:

Thank you for the reply it makes sense. As for your “quibble,” I completely understand and agree about the “traditional”, should consider how I use that word… 😅

As always you have been helpful, I think you have responded to some of my other posts in the past and I appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut.
