Bridge of Spies - has anyone seen it?

I want to go to a movie Thursday. The Martian and Bridge of Spies both got high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. I am more of a Tom Hanks fan than a Matt Damon fan.
I am wondering if Bridge of Spies is worth seeing.

I like Tom Hanks more than Matt Damon, so I’d see Bridge of Spies.
 
I have seen The Martian. It’s good. It’s been years; since I’ve heard people applaud at the end of a movie.

One bad word, not spoken, typed out with symbols for the letters in between the first and last letter. One brief scene with a shot of a male nude backside. I assume a body double for Matt Damon. The scene demonstrates something happening to Matt Damon’s character. I don’t want to give it away.

Bridge of Spies is next on my “want to see” list.

Yes, definitely worth seeing. I’m in the category of those who think it’s one of Spielberg’s best movies (it’s light years better than “Lincoln” and “War Horse,” neither of which I liked at all.)

It’s not a thriller or courtroom drama – the main story line is resolved in the first half hour – rather, it’s a very talky, dialogue-driven movie – very little profanity or swearing – about a prisoner exchange – we (the U.S.) exchanged a Soviet spy for the guy who flew the U-2 spy plane. Most everything in the movie reportedly really happened, and it was reportedly going to be a movie with Gregory Peck (in the Tom Hanks role) and Alec Guinness years before Speilberg got it.

If you’re looking for the better movie – no F-bombs, no suggestive content – go with Bridge of Spies. A much better movie.
 
We saw Bridge of Spies Saturday and were absolutely riveted by it. We could really identify, as the hubby and I would have been about the age of the Tom Hanks’ character’s young children at that time. We were well familiar with the worry about nuclear war with Russia.

It is a simply terrific movie, and Hanks is, as usual, outstanding. The actor who played the Russian spy is a renowned stage actor, former director of The Globe Theatre in London; he is wonderful.

Go see it!!!

I think the actor who plays the Russian spy is Mark Rylance? I was very impressed with his performance on PBS when he played Cromwell on the series based on the Hilary Mantel trilogy.
He was magnificent. ok. I think I will see Bridge of Spies then.
 
I liked the movie but I didn’t love it. It dragged in the middle. Also, I think it tried too hard to create specific emotional moments. And it tossed in a random F bomb. But overall, it was good. Just not great IMO.

If you mind F bombs, sadly, you won’t like many non-Disney films, IMNAAHO.

I think things were slower at the beginning, but it picked right up.

I did see it. I liked it and I agree it did try hard to create emotional moments - inspired by true events. Sometimes I rolled my eyes-they were pretty obvious-almost corny, but I enjoyed it. At least I didn’t walk out thinking I had wasted my money like I have with so many other movies I have seen over the last few years.

I don’t mind F-bombs - (haha… not that I particularly like them either, but they don’t bother me) It just didn’t seem to fit coming out of the mouth of Tom Hank’s classy, educated, well spoken character. It sounded very 2015, not 1960 - but I could be wrong? 🤷

We watched The Martian last night. I did not like it at all. Very boring. I thought Matt Damon was terrible. The disco music really got on my nerves. The cast did nothing for me. They all acted very important. I didn’t even find the jokes funny. I have no desire to read the book.
 
We just watched Bridge of Spies, it’s on Redbox now.
Splendid movie, I was impressed by Hanks’ character’s comment that “everyone is important.” It really resonated. I loved how he stood fast and demanded, in a low key way, that the college kid be released as well as the pilot, who was more important politically and from a military standpoint.
It reminded me of A Man for All Seasons.

yes, it was a good movie.
 
I liked how Hanks was concerned how the russians would treat the spy once he was traded back, and and when it happened, no hugs were given, they simply showed him the back seat of the car.

And also how the US Soldier was cold shouldered at the end because he didn’t follow the instructions given by the USAF. It also conveyed the mad paranoia that gripped the US in the 1950s, but showed that “Standing Man” could overcome hysteria and prejudice by sticking to his principles. A great movie and great performances by Hanks and Rylance.

I agree. I haven’t noticed if it has received any academy award nominations or not.

Six nominations including Best Film and Best Supporting Actor for Mark Rylance, an award he won at the Baftas.
