I just want a short explanation on why or why not Supernatural would be an appropriate/inappropriate show to watch.

For the most part, I love the show. It is now in season 10 and in my opinion still going strong. Its emphasis on the power and bond of familial love and loyalty, the ultimate victory of good vs evil, and the importance of self-sacrifice are commendable. Its a fantasy show and its depiction of preternatural forces and beings shouldn’t be taken seriously. That being said, the season 5 (I think?) arc which depicted the show’s fictional version of the archangels crossed the line by using the holy names of real archangels whom we as Catholic venerate (Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael) while depicting them in an unfavorable light. As long as its fantasy, I don’t have an issue…but when it comes to using the holy names of true angels it goes too far.

^^^ what he said about season 5 sums up my problem with the show. It’s not so far-far away, but certainly it is fantasy. It seems to minimize and ba$)/-dize truly preternatural beings. I don’t watch, my son loves it.

It is a terrible show for anyone not grounded in solid doctrine of angels, demons, Heaven, Hell and, most importantly, the nature of God and Man.
The mythology of the series is fantasy, an unreality. Nothing they say has any bearing on spiritual realities. If one can approach the show with the proper understand that it is all pure myth, then this particular problem is not relevant. The problem is that such fantasies that are close to reality, are the ones that most easily skew our thinking.
The violence and gore in the movie is not only a pause for concern, it also serves as an analogy of the above. If one understands the nature of such devices, and is not tempted into violence, then it is might be okay. The same problem exists for the sexual promiscuity.
That being said, the show exhorts such values as courage, love and duty.
