The practice actually has its roots in Jewish practice of offering (or dedicating) 10 percent of oneās harvest to God. Even today, produce from the faithfulās fields and gardens are offered during the offetory in some parts of the world. While the fruits of the earth which are useful to man are offered to God, flowers were not as they did not sustain man. Gradually, the faithful began to offer them to the Blessed Mother because they reflected a beauty which mirrored her spiritual beauty. The flowers were meaningless tokens without use to the world, but they represented a devotion to the Blessed Mother in the hearts of the faithful.
