Reading through old threads such as this one has brought up quite a few questions for me, and Ithink you for your patience as I’m sure much of the information you impart to me may seem redundant, or at least quite basic.

I was wondering, would I have to have a canonical transfer before I raise my child in the Byzantine Rite?

My father was OCA, my mother Latin Rite. I was baptized Latin Rite, and my huband is not Catholic (though we had out marriage convalidated). My son was baptized in the Latin Rite.

How could my son receive the sacraments in the future if we exclusively attend the Byzantine Rite?

I will send you in PM. In the meantime, I’m glad you are considering this spiritual move, as it is clear from other posts and exchanges that you are being drawn Eastward, so to speak. As a parent, I also understand your concerns for the religious upbringing of your children.

Despite being a “cradle” Byzantine, (i) that is through heritage of my father, and my mother was raised RC and (ii) my wife was raised Methodist, and mentioned to me even this past Sunday that she does not ever think she could convert. So, I have challenges (crosses) of my own that are similar, yet not nearly as complex as what you have described.

May the peace of the Lord be with you, and may the Holy Spirit guide you!

In the meantime, lowly old me will PM you …

You can belong to an eastern Catholic parish and be enrolled in the Latin Church. Yet, the Latin Church canons apply to you instead of the eastern, so the sacramental discipline, holy days, and penitential practices are of the Latin Church as a norm for you. So once baptism, confirmation, and first communion have been completed in (or with approval of) the Latin Church, then reception of communion in an eastern Church is proper according to the canons. Penance, and Anointing of the Sick (normally by ones pastor) are also available from either. Marriage and Orders are more complex and there are significant differences.

Your child then is also Latin Church enrolled. It is possible to request a transfer however.
