That article omits more information than it states and raises more questions than it gives answers. There’s not enough information here to even form an opinion.
If the statue doesn’t meet the criteria for carry-on items (it sounds like it doesn’t), then it would be a safety hazard for her, the other passengers and the crew. If she became abusive, then it is, as it should be, within the right of the airline staff to deny her a boarding pass. Their first concern is flight safety.
It doesn’t matter who she is, rules are rules. People don’t realize what an airplane can do in an emergency, and that statue could become a deadly missile. Just imagine if some unexpected turbulence occured, or the pilot had to make some evasive maneuver. What would have been a non-event could easily injure or even kill people.
I’m pretty sure that BA would have gotten Mary to her destination safely and securely, in the cargo hold, if the Nun would have allowed them to do their job.
