Rumpole was great. The books were even better.

Looks good, but I notice like other Britcoms, the DVDs are not compatible with American DVD players.
Another show not compatible with American DVD players is You Rang M’ Lord? I previewed it on Youtube, but its not available in the US,
 
I’m glad someone started a thread on this…I just love British comedy! My favourite is “Fawlty Towers”…I’ve practically memorized the whole show. It’s just so brilliantly witty to me that I’ve been known to randomly quote it many times. 😃

Other shows I like include the classics, such as “Dad’s Army”, “Are You Being Served?” and “Keeping Up Appearances” but also newer ones such as “The IT Crowd”. In terms of Irish sitcoms, I also really enjoy “Father Ted” now and again.

Overall, I personally find British sitcoms to be much more original and witty than their American counterparts. I don’t watch a lot of TV but most of what I do watch is British, either comedy or BBC’s costume dramas. 👍
 
Being a bit of a history buff, I’ve always loved Blackadder

And being Irish “Fr. Ted” is classic

And finally, “Are you being served”
 
I vaguely recall a comedy series with a title something like, ‘May to December’ about a romance between an older gentlemen and younger woman.

The Blackadder series set in WWI was the best…IMHO

Its very hard for one to watch American comedy after you’ve seen Britcoms. That doesn’t mean the Brits can’t make stinkers, they can. But not with the frequency as Americoms.
I think the limited number of episodes is a factor. The British make 6 to 8 episodes a year, so they are going to put their best stuff first.
American shows, still stuck in a format that should have been abandoned long ago, number 24 to 26 a year. With that many episodes, you’re going to get lazy.
In the old days it was 39.
Another factor is the imatative factor. One sitcom becomes a hit, and we suddenly see 20 more like it.
The culture is probably a factor too. I would LOVE to see an American verson of Blackadder. But Ameicans don’t seem to want to laugh at thier past like the British do.
Can you imagine an American Blackadder with Jefferson as a dolt, and Ben Franklin as a sex mad maniac.
The outcry would be very loud.
 
Most of my favs have already been mentioned, but I’ll add My Hero to the list. Unfortunately only the first two seasons can be found in the US, but they are great! 😃

My favorites are: Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, Keeping Up Appearances, Black Adder, the Young Ones, and Are you Being Served. There are a few more that I have only seen clips of. As for as current ones, they are mostly trash but there is one that is actually an educational show but it is also some of the funniest comedy that I have seen recently. Unfortunately, my husband and I have only been able to find it on YouTube. Its called Horrible Histories.

Horrible Histories is good, though sometimes they can be anti-Catholic in their explanation of the Inquisition and on Pope Julius, but it can be overlooked by their other things.

Dunno, I seem to recall them giving Henry VIII and Elizabeth I what for as well. I’ve loved it ever since I read the books years ago.
