Hello everyone,
I apologize in advance for the long post.

I am writing here to ask for advice regarding a very difficult decision I had to make last week. I met a charming, handsome and respectful man–and we quickly connected. It was my first experience dating, and he impressed me in so many ways. We connected so quickly that we even began talking about a future together. Unfortunately, he is a lapsed Catholic and I found that his views on marriage were quite different than mine. For example, he had a past relationship where he had been physically intimate. I told him my views on marriage and why chastity is key to marriage. I emphasized that these are my values, therefore I couldn’t compromise. He told me he believed that physical intimacy in a relationship (before marriage) was important; however, he was very respectful about my views and told me he would wait for me until marriage. And so, I decided to put his past behind, respected his views, and gave him a chance.

But later on, the topic of birth control came up and again, emphasized that these are my values. I explained to him the church’s teachings and he didn’t agree. He thought my views were extreme and did not see the sin in birth control. When we decided to take a break to clear our thoughts about this potential relationship, he told me that his heart wanted to be with me and was willing to “explore” these views together (I think deep down he was hoping that I would change my mind). This slightly confused me, because I clearly told him that I was not willing to compromise my values. Anyhow, I prayed and I prayed, and asked mother Mary to guide my decision. On the day that we met again, when I agreed to trying in the relationship, my heart filled with fear. It was a very odd feeling–my heart started to beat faster and I experienced a surge of anxiety. I suffer from anxiety at times especially when being close to boys (this was my first time ever holding a man’s hand:blush:). Reflecting on this incident, this could have been God’s sign, but I don’t know, really.

Fast forward several hours into our date, while we were casually walking in the city, he confided something very personal–he told me that he was desensitized to pornography and did not see an issue with watching it 😦 😦 😦 Being the naive person I was, I didn’t really fathom the prevailing issue of pornography in our culture–last thing I would have ever thought was my potential boyfriend looking at it regularly. As a result, I became upset–in fact, very quickly. I judged his actions, told him how disgusting I thought pornography was and made the impulsive decision an hour later to break off the relationship. He hugged me one last time and we parted our ways…

I am writing to you right now with so much regret at the way I reacted to his use of pornography. I would never have done something like that to a friend, and yet I did this to someone I really really cared about. I miss him so much and I just want to talk to him and properly articulate what I meant to say. I understand that this will make everything so much more complicated so, I have decided to not do this right now. My spiritual director strongly recommended that I break off this relationship. My Catholic friend is supporting me in my decision to leave him. But I am just sitting here and missing him. We had different values but he respected mine and was somewhat open. Did I give up on someone without even trying?

I would appreciate any advice and/or prayers.
Thank you so much.

You are in my prayers,
rafarose

You did the right thing. Be thankful that he was honest and up front with you about it!! If he’s ‘desensitized’, that means he sees it a LOT. He may (or may not) have an addiction to it. I can tell you from FIRST-hand experience that it’s a terrible problem to have in a relationship; especially a marriage. It’s difficult enough without knowingly attaching yourself to someone who has that problem.

Sometimes we don’t know why people come in and out of our lives. It may be that he needed to have the seed of chastity/purity planted in his heart so that it can grow down the road in his journey, and God used you to place it there - and NOTHING MORE. Praise God! 👍

Ultimately the decision to get back in contact with him is yours. If you do not feel comfortable about how you reacted then I think you should apologize and talk to him about it, even if nothing more than that.

We all have our temptations, “demons” and crosses to carry. We should not judge anyone, because although in different ways, we ALL sin. The fact that a secular (since you said he was lapsed) man was willing to wait until marriage says a lot in today’s society.

Rather than listen to any of us I say you go with your “gut”. As a good Catholic woman;) I would assume you have a well formed conscience and should follow it.

God used this time to test you and your fidelity to Him. You did everything right, you did not water down your faith or beliefs for a human being. You put God and faith first! You are experiencing a loss of a hope that it was finally God’s timing for marriage, but not over this particular man. He was not who you wanted deep down. You were honest with yourself and God by declining future dating of this man. Loosing your first boyfriend (or any boyfriend) is always hard. :console:

rafarose, if he brought the subject of pornography up himself… my guess is he was deliberately gauging your reaction in a make or break sort of way. I think the worst thing you could have done would have been to let it go or suppress your disgust because that would have cast you as someone who could be ‘bought’ eventually. You did the right thing for sure. I personally wouldn’t seek him out to apologise but if you happened to come across him again in an unplanned way, you could apologise for being so abrupt but explain that you were very shocked.

There are many men who don’t have a taste for pornography in this world and that is a far better prospect for you in the future. God bless.

I think you did the right thing.

If you feel you were somehow unkind in your response about his viewing of pornography you could send him a letter apologizing for that but make it clear that this is not opening up the option of a relationship with him. Make it a final goodbye. But since he hugged you a final time I think probably he was okay with how you handled it.

You did the right thing.

You should not compromise when it comes to your morals and what you consider important in a marriage. Before he even told you about him being desensitised to porn, you were having problems with sex before marriage and birth control and these are things you need to have in common with a future spouse. With things like this, you can’t have a spouse who is somewhat open to your values. You need to have someone who not only respects your values, but accepts them and holds them up, even when you yourself may not feel like it.

I know you are second guessing your decision, but all I can say (along with the other posters on this thread) is you made the best decision, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.

Lou

Here is a two-sided reply. You did the right thing at that moment. It was very unlikely that if you had compromised in any way you would have ever had any control in this relationship in the future.

There are a few considerations now that must be said:
  1. He has now learned that honesty is not necessarily the best policy. It is probably less certain that he might be as frank in the future. At the same time he has learned that pornography is not as acceptable to everyone so it might cause him some hesitation to partake in the future if he now associates it with your disappointment and he truly longs for your company (or someone like you in the future).
  2. If the next boy you encounter does not bring up the topic of pornography will you simply assume he does not look at it? This corrupting scourge has become so pervasive in our society that it seems to have stricken a vast, vast majority…even among those who might otherwise hold very Christian values…
  3. The concept that certain dissenting views must always be deal breakers is yours to make. The important thing to consider is whether these views might be permanent and unchangeable or whether they might have been formed out of ignorance and be malleable. For some men do improve with (prior to!) marriage…while some corrupt…
Yet I do understand your feelings. The first girl I considered marrying (I had given her a ring of promise) had a more liberal view towards premarital sex than I did. As a consequence she often attempted to trick me into, ah, certain things…finally, after one final deceptive foray I explained that it was out of respect for my future wife that I was not interested in compromising…at all. The relationship folded shortly thereafter…even though I had great feelings for her it did not seem likely that her attitudes would change. I was concerned that with so little premarital restraint she might have an equal difficulty afterwards…good luck!

You did the right thing.

The purpose of dating is to find out these things. You know now, and the smart thing is to move on. This is how you tell God that you are serious about your faith and that your singleness, your dating, your marriage, will, as far as you are able, going to love and honor God. To continue dating a man that has no interest in loving and honoring God with his life is a train wreck in the future. What would have happened is that you would have continued to care for him more and more deeply, then been in a place that he could ask you to compromise things. He would have had leverage to pull you to his side. He might have gone to church with you a few times then said how a relationship is ‘give and take’ and he’s doing all the giving.

If you knew how a Godly man would be such a blessing, you wouldn’t second guess this. Together you can walk hand in hand, be in God’s blessing, and go from strength to strength, learning together, and through life together. Build your foundation on the rock that is Christ. There are no regrets there. The wind and the rains will come, but your house will stand.

When you pray tonight, ask God to continue to strengthen you so that you will be firm in walking in His blessing. It’s a real mine field to navigate out there.

Believe it or not, you will be better off without him.

There are lots of women (and men), who end up marrying someone is a lapse Catholic, Protestant, Jew, or even an atheist and get disastrous results. The spouse won’t cooperate or worse, they grow apart and end up in divorce

I’m not sure how old you are, but there are LOTS of Catholic guys out there who are legit and would love to find a fantastic woman like yourself. Don’t let this slow you down. And above all…PRAY! 👍

So–if he is desensitized, why would he watch it? Wouldn’t he not watch it?

Does he watch it for the excellent writing and compelling story lines? (Sarcasm)…ugh.

You can do so much better then this guy.

You are a smart girl who used good sense to flee from a potentially destructive relationship. You did try; you found out that he does not share in the morals and values that matter most to you; respecting your values is not the same as sharing them. Fortunately, you found out right away; some people do not discover it until it is too late. You never really had anything more than a casual relationship with this guy; you will soon get over it and move on to a guy who is more compatible with your faith. :grouphug:

Thank you all very much for your support. Your words have truly lifted my spirit. I have been contemplating on whether I should write him a letter to explain myself, but I will pray about it first. If anything, when I see him again (likely to happen) I will talk to him. I started praying for him too.

It is definitely difficult to objectively look at things, especially when so many emotions are involved.

God bless!
You are all in my prayers.

Did I give up on someone without even trying?
No, you’re better off without him. And he’s better off without you. Your respective world views are just too different. You would have ended up making each other miserable. Much better that you each find someone more comparable. Best of luck.

You do not need to write a letter to explain yourself. He knows that viewing pornography is wrong, even if he views it. You do not need to defend your values to someone that you have no values in common with.

You miss having someone, you do not miss him.

There will be others dear one. And they must be worthy of all you believe. Don’t settle for someone that does not have the same faith as you.

May God bless you and guide you.

Yes. You do not need to write a letter to explain yourself.
Maybe what you said needed to be said. Where else would he hear that? From a woman of faith. You shone a light in his dark world. Let him think on it, maybe for the first time.

You are the jewel that got away, not him.
You are looking for God’s blessing! continue in this.

Dear Irishmom and PennyinCanada,

You are both absolutely right. Yes, I was abrupt and it could really have been a blessing in disguise. I will not write a letter but if i ever see him again ill briefly explain that i was shocked. I’ve been praying for him and I know that God is going to take good care of him.

Thanks a lot everyone 🙂

You can go ahead and not be shocked anymore when some boy you meet has seen porn. Especially if they are 25 or under. Good heavens, it’s everywhere and it’s free, they can’t hardly avoid it.

Just be thankful that it isn’t worse. The next generation will have to ask if their boyfriends own a sex robot.

This boy offered up the information unsolicited that he was so familiar with porn that he was desensitised to it and that he didn’t think there was anything wrong with it. Women who stand their ground on such issues and don’t cave because ‘everybody is doing it’ are the only hope for the next generation of women.
