Broken dishwasher, oven, etc on holiday?

Is there something in the design of a major appliance so it knows to break down on a major holiday (or when your husband is away on business, or when your in-laws are staying for 3 weeks)?

Dishwasher just does not want to work, as in, no good deed goes unpunished. We could have spent the day alone, run out to Jack in the Box, but no, we had to cook this ham and invite others in the same boat–no place to go for Christmas–my own fault. Well, I will do the dishes. Eventually. Just not now. nap time. want to bet no repairmen will be working this weekend?

I hear ya, Annie.:o We have had these appliance breakdowns as well either at Thanksgiving or Christmas. We also have an older house so the sewer pipes are the old style clay/terracata type and sure as you can bank on it. Every few years those tiny tree roots grow through the pipes and back up the drains from the whole house and we’re calling a plumber for the Holiday’s.:rolleyes:

Anyway hope the rest of your Christmas was good and can find a repair guy tomorrow.😉
 
Last Christmas the oven thermostat went out…After I had already put in the roast beef. Next thing I know smoke is pouring from the oven and the roast was burnt to a dry hard lump:blush: It was not my best holiday.

Two years ago my oven went out for Thanksgiving. That’s the biggest deal for my husband. I cook 12 courses every year by myself for him. If I didn’t do it, I think he might could wanna divorce. I think. Hehehe…

Anyway, my neighbor was out of town, but I was watching her dog, so she gave me permission to use her oven. Not a situation that I would want to go through again. I feel where you’re coming from.
 
Remember my fridge broke down days before Thanksgiving? Yeah well, there’s your answer. 👍 😃
 
yes but how does the appliance know it’s a holiday? they have to be programmed, right?
 
When I was growing up and we lived in the Denver area we had a Jewish tv. It would only go on the blink on Jewish Holidays - know how we figured that one out? Our repair guy was Jewish and he didn’t work on Holy Days - we would all pile into the van with the tv on the floor in the back and go over to his place of business, then home again because he would have this hand written sign saying what High Holy Day it was and his office was closed - next day the tv worked just fine! Being Catholic we didn’t know what days those were but what a great witness to the true Worship of God! Too bad we can’t all do the same these days (although I do with my Avon business and most of my customers know it).

So far I haven’t had an appliance quit during a holiday alhtough we lived the first three or four years in our new home with a broken dishwasher - it was one of those real cheap ones and would have cost more to fix it than to buy another one so we just hand washed dishes. I finally got enough Avon money built up and decided I would buy a new one. Am saving said money now for a new Fridge - looking at on of those new French door ones w/the big tray on the bottom.

This exactly what happened to my brother and his family this Christmas. They were watching the neighbor’s dog so the neighbor let them use their oven.
 
My stove broke, my water heater wasn’t working, my sink pipes froze, and the water pipes to the washer froze as well… 🤷 I didn’t cook for Christmas eve, by the time my db figured out how to fix the stove, we owed the repair man 20 bucks for 30 minutes of trying to make us pay 200 bucks for the stove to be fixed, so my db decided to figure it out himself and save me that money…All it cost was 30 bucks…and 30 minutes to fix… 😦 lol…

Sink water is still not coming back, still frozen, so had to wash all dishes etc in the bathroom… :eek:

Friends and my dbs family wanted to come over but I had to tell them I wasn’t cooking anything until yesterday, and by the time our Christmas dinner was done yesterday it was too late to invite anyone!! 😦

But even though our Christmas was great!! 😃
 
Our oven went out on Tuesday before thanksgiving and we had a total of 48 people coming on Saturday. Big chunk of Christmas went to the Oven. 4th time it had died, this time I couldn’t find replacement parts.

Yes, I think they have secret timers in them.:whacky: The timers are set for holidays shortly AFTER the warranty expires.😃
 
warranty ran out one month ago to the day. Happy New Year to you, too, Mr. Maytag Repairman
 
Last year, we moved into a new apartment just days before Christmas. Since things were so crazy, we hadn’t gotten much shopping done, and decided to make cookies for a few people on our list. Luckily, we tried to preheat the oven before starting on the dough. The knob would only turn to broil or 500 degrees, nothing less! :eek:

We ended up baking them while opening gifts at my grandparents’ house. And our new oven was installed within a week. 😃
 
We woke up to a cold house on Christmas morning but my husband and I were so busy neither of us checked the thermostat until about 10 a.m. It was 53 degrees in the house! We keep it so cold at night, the kids didn’t really notice just how chilly it was! So my husband fiddled around with the fusebox and got the furnace up and running enough to take the chill out of the air. So we need that repaired now. Then the garbage disposal got clogged up and doesn’t want to work either. We have a leaky roof, and a leaky shower. But we had a great Christmas because we were all together and we were mostly healthy!
 
😃 This is great! Our dishwasher broke around this past Thanksgiving. I remember doing a truck load of dishes by hand. We are only two, and only use it when we have company, holidays, or just really behind. So, needless to say we never bothered to replace it. It is inconvenient, but my husband helps when theres a lot. It’s fun having that extra time together. 😃

Then our stove broke the Sunday before Christmas. That we had to get fixed as I cook a lot of things in the oven. Luckily I’m not a baker, so no Christmas baking was ruined. It was fixed in time for me to make a Turkey and the trimmings, we almost had to go out to eat. 😛

Our washer and dryer have been making terrible sounds too. At this rate one will break on New Years and the other Valentines Day. :rolleyes:
 
It wasn’t on Christmas, but during the month of December, the following happened:
  1. Sewer backed up due to tree roots in the old sewer pipes.
  2. Water softener stopped working. We have hard well water, so we had to replace it or have rusty towels and baths.
  3. DS’s computer monitor blew.
  4. garage roof sprung a leak due to leaves.
We’re ready for a stretch of Things Not Breaking.
