I have resorted to asking for assistance in an online, anonymous way because although I have contemplated asking my own parish priest for guidance, I wouldn’t want him to know so much because I am more or lessly a private person, which is why I am surprised that I’m even taking the time to admit I need guidance.

This is a question on keeping the faith.

I am a high school student; I’m going to be a junior at a public school in the fall. I had attended a private Catholic middle school my entire life beforehand, it was only after I attended public that I have started having doubts on my faith because I have been exposed to much worse things.

When I was 13 years old my father passed away. He had been sick his entire life, I remember being 8 years old and he couldn’t attend my First Communion because he was dying in a hospital because of complications with a kidney and liver transplant. Eventually he pulled through, but not without dozens of medications to keep him alive.

The year he passed away I remember he seemed very depressed. He would threaten to my mother that he was going to stop taking his medicines because he couldn’t take it any more. I do not know the exact amount he was taking but I’m guessing it was around 20 a day, each for something different. Later that year he went on a business trip and got sick. He came home and a few days later drove himself to the emergency room. Doctors found he had a kidney stone in his transplanted kidney, and refused to do anything about it at first because they didn’t want to be liable because it was not their transplant, it was a much more advanced hospital’s job–Northwestern of Chicago. They wanted my father to consent to another transplant but he refused. He didn’t want to go through the pain again. Eventually he was transferred to Northwestern again and they tried to get the kidney stone out but there was too much blood and clotting. He developed sepsis and essentially every one of his systems began to fail.

Doctors asked my mother repeatedly to sign the DNR forms for him, and I remember her screaming back that she couldn’t because she had my sister and I to worry about. He passed about a week after.

About a month after his passing my mother and I were going through his nightstand and found bottles of pills. Hundreds. Filled. It was obvious that he had not been taking them like he should have been. My daddy didn’t want to live. He killed himself.

Fast forward about 2 years and I had closure, somewhat. But I healed through my patient boyfriend, not through the Lord. We have been together since September 5th, 2011.

He has lost a lot of faith as well, he was severely depressed and attempted suicide. But I called him back and we have been together since. But his family is moving to Dallas, TX in less than month. I have never loved anyone as much as I have loved him and I am afraid of how the move will affect our relationship. As it is, my mother does not approve of our relationship because of the town he is from and will not let me see him, so I see him in secret from time to time.

Not only is the love of my life moving far away from me, but my best friend was just released from a psychiatric ward for attempted suicide. And I deal with daily insults from my younger sister about how I was born.

My mother could not get pregnant after having my older sister, so she turned to invitro fertilization. They were my father’s sperm cells, not a donors. I was a miracle baby, born through crio invitro fertilization. But I know that the Catholic church does not approve of that. My sister tells me that God does not love me because He did not create me.

Does God really not love me because of the way I was created, of which I had no control over? Did my beloved father go to heaven, even though he engaged in the way I was conceived, and was so miserable he wanted to end his life? Will my guardian angel, if they exist, guide me through the emotional suffering I will be put through when my boyfriend moves away? Why didn’t God guide my father? Is there hope for me?

I have lost a lot of faith pondering these questions.

Thank you for your help and guidance.

Forgive me, your sister doesn’t know what she is talking about, sorry. . .

God loves you - always. Even when we ignore him, he loves us , loves you. Guardian angels exist, I promise. 🙂 ask yours to pray with and for you. Just try it. You’ll be surprised. There is always hope for you - you are God’s child! Never let anyone tell you differently. Your father had free will as do you. He made his choices, but you can still pray for him too. Be cautious of your choices and trust in the Lord. Most importantly, never forget how special and loved you are…

God bless you ~

Yes God loves you! He created you!! Never forget that. You are loved with open arms and it is wrong for your sister to say otherwise.

As far as your father going to heaven, if he believed in God and had a remorseful heart he was forgiven for his sins. It sounds like he suffered tremendously while on earth, and God knew more than anyone just how much. Don’t judge your dad or let others do so either. God knows of the worry you carry. Talk to him and continue to pray for your father.

It will be difficult for you when your boyfriend moves away, but remember that God knows what is best for you and your faith. Put all of your fears and worries in God’s hands. And yes, you can ask your Guardian Angel for help, but I encourage you to lean on our Blessed Mother more than any one. She will hold you in her arms and give you strength and comfort.

Know too that the questions and doubts you are having now are normal and actually show the strength of your faith - not the weakness. You mentioned that you have been exposed to much. If you had a weak faith, you wouldn’t be struggling as much as you are now you would have already turned away from the church. Always remember that your faith is a journey for life and you will feel ups and downs along the way.

I encourage you to receive the sacraments of the Eucharist and reconcilation as often as you can. If one of the parishes near you has an adoration chapel, this would be a wonderful place to go have a heart-to-heart talk with our Lord. Ask him all of these same questions just as you did here. The rosary is also a tremedous support for your faith. For me personally, it changed my life around when I began saying it more regularly.

Finally, I want you to know that I will be praying for you. Our world today is attacking our Catholic Faith more than ever before. This is the devil at work. You have been baptized into such a wonderful faith and you are at a time in your life where the doubt you are experiencing is normal. Don’t let this part of your spiritual journey steer you away from it. Lean on our Lord and Blessed Mother and let them bring you closer to it. They love you so very much!!

As someone who has taken 30 years to come to a solid understanding of God and our relationship to him, let me assure you “seek and ye shall find” is true. My path has consisted of bible study, listening to EWTN and praying for the grace of Christ so that I could love God with all I am and my neighbor as myself.

Trust me, even the worst, most persistent emotional pain goes away. The Holy Spirit has a way of guiding you if you are listening (by listening, I mean doing the things that I listed).

Peace and God Bless

Jack Handy

Thank you so much everyone for taking time out of your day to reply.

I prayed to God and my angels last night, asking for peace and guidance in the days to come. I am involved in my parish handbell choir but other than that I don’t attend Church very often because my mother lost all of her faith as well. But I will try to go more regularly. The only thing that makes me a little apprehensive is that I know they have altered the responses because they found a better translation. That didn’t help when it came to trying to maintain my faith.

I told Josh, my boyfriend, what I had done and he seemed happy that I was starting to trust in God again. I hope that after I can regain full trust in the Lord I can help him to as well. He’s been through things 10 times worse than I have; it’s going to take time.

I hope that with trust in God I will gain patience with my mother as well. We aren’t as close as we used to be due mostly because she won’t let me see Josh. Although my own grandmother adores him, she won’t give him a chance.

I guess that maybe because I had turned away for so long that’s why scary life-altering changes took place. Perhaps demons were feeding off of my loss of faith and taking it further and further.

Thank you very much for helping me. I’ve spent the last few months feeling lost because I know that historically the Catholic church has viewed invitro fertilization as “an immoral sin” so I have been feeling like I was damned and had no shot at heaven. But I guess I will have to trust that God will have compassion for me and allow for me to live with Him in eternity.

Thank you all very very much.

God is not going to punish you for the means by which your conception was brought about. You had no say in the matter whatsoever and therefore can have no blame at all attributed to you.

My dear young sister in Christ,

Your suffering is terrible and I will pray for you. Please know that coming to this forum is by way of grace. God has not given up on you and he will make the crooked lines straight. We are all tested and face trials in our lives. Yours are greater than mine and many others, but there are those who face even greater challenges. Put your trust in the Lord. In doing so, the Lord will ask much of you and it will perhaps require great spiritual heroism on your part. You must seek the Lord and his will for you. Do this prayerfully, with your whole heart, mind, and strength. Abandon everything else. It is only through this process that we find peace in the arms of the Lord.

Our seeking the Lord and loving the Lord means separating ourselves from sin. Jesus hears your cry and knows your pain. Follow the Church no matter the pain or suffering. Pray everyday and as often as you can. These times can be upon waking from sleep. Stepping out of your car in a parking lot, walking through a store, between classes or anytime you transition from one activity to another. Praise God and ask for his mercy. Do your best to be Jesus to others. Do not waste your suffering. Offer it to the Lord in prayer. Your suffering can have great value when united to the suffering of Jesus and offered to God. Never give up…the Lord never gives up on you.

Again…I will pray for you.

God bless.

Thank you both, I have not felt such a strong connection to my faith in months. I’m so glad I found this website and was able to find people to turn to in a time of spiritual need. 🙂

Thank you,

Just so you know fully, a person born of invitro bares no responsibility for the sin of their parents. It is the same as a child born from rape, they are as innocent as any other person born. This is not just my personal opinion but what the Church outwardly states.

My daddy didn’t want to live. He killed himself.
Iris that is true in a way but it is not called suicide. The Catholic Church teaches that we do not have to take extraordinary medical intervention to stay alive. I would confidently say that given your dad’s condition and the number of tablets he was taking that he was using extraordinary means to stay alive. Thus letting nature (read God) take its course is not sinful - though a painful loss for you and so something we all empathise with.
But I healed through my patient boyfriend, not through the Lord.
If only you had eyes to see! Why could your boyfriend not be a gift from God at this time?
God normally helps us through proximate, human causes rather than outright miracles or prayer rapture.
have never loved anyone as much as I have loved him … I see him in secret from time to time.
Good luck to you. But be wise, its so easy to make poor long term decisions when we are young and in pain.
Does God really not love me because of the way I was created, of which I had no control over?
You already know the answer to that, hopefully you are reassured by other’s comments.
Did my beloved father go to heaven, even though he engaged in the way I was conceived Why didn’t God guide my father?
We are all human, our parents make mistakes too. Look at the overall big picture of his life and see things in context. Did he love you (he must have to do what he did). His sacrificial pain would have counted for much in God’s eyes if he took that approach. You are able to pray for him every day are you not if you believe he still needs purification before finally being admitted to God’s presence. He can no longer pray for himself but you can.

Perhaps it will help you to realize God loves you if you ponder a bit on how a new human person comes into existence.
The father and mother play a role only in providing the human sperm and ovum – the material part of a new human being. Without the infusion of a soul, the union of the sperm and ovum would never result in a new human person. It is only when God chooses to create and infuse a soul into that material (united sperm and ovum) that it becomes “alive”. Only then does a living human being come into existence.

Rest assured Broken Faith, that the only reason you exist is because God thought about “you”, desired “you” to exist, and therefore He created you - created your soul and infused it into the united sperm and ovum in that petri dish. He could have chosen not to create your soul. However, He must have desired you very much since He did choose to create your soul even tho your parents had used a method which was not the way He had ordained.

So, whenever you begin to doubt God’s love, remind yourself that the only reason you exist is because God wanted you to “be”.

It is natural and rightful that you have questions.

Your Father did not kill himself; he let himself die from what were extraordinary circumstances. Had he been born in another time or place, he could have already died from his pre-transplant condidtion. And the Chuch does NOT require someone to be kept alive by extraordianry means. You can get legalistic about it, but even pills are pretty extra ordinary, and most have way more warnings thatn benefits. And to take a soup of 20 if them??? Very problematic.

Your sister is a hastle freak, however nice she might be otherwise. She has a distinct and serious problem that has nothing to do with you, but only her own sense of ego. Something is not based on love, there in her attitude. She’s being a twerp from hjer own pain.

I’m sorry that your boyfriend, who is clearly your mutual support, is moving away. That is very difficult. Just stay in touch by Skype or Facebook, or whatever.

God is bigger than any particular religion. Your problems are mostly relational, with people, and within yourslef. You may not feel or sense that “God is with you.” That, in a way, doesn’t matter. Wtever is happening in your life, it is very useful to be open to something bigger that you don’t necessarioly see or understand. Consider the Universe, or God, or anything that takes you out of your own personal situation. You will never get past a problem by using the thinking that got you into it. So it is good to be deliberately open to something Loving ang wonderful, even in the darkest times. And remember if you see darkness, it is because you see by the Light of being alive. Darkness witll pass, even if it doesn’t seem that way at any particular moment. 🙂

Genius, even the genius of living an ordinarly life, is greatly a matter of persistence, and knowing that feelings are like weather. They may be tempestuous and really rock your boat, but they do pass. If you ahve a grandparent you love, or someone older you trust, confide in them. Your questions are WAY mor common than you might image!

And you are always in the arms of Love, especially God’s however you think of that, or don’t.

Thank you both, I have not felt such a strong connection to my faith in months. I’m so glad I found this website and was able to find people to turn to in a time of spiritual need. 🙂

Thank you,
One small side note, if this helps…

Faith is not an emotion. It is not something we always “feel like” doing. Many young people make this mistake. If they don’t feel ‘close’ to God then they assume its not real.
Faith is kinda like ‘eating healthy’ - we don’t always want to do it…but it is what our bodies need.
Our souls, like our own bodies… whither if not fed and excercised.

Emotions are fleeting and transient… they are not the substance to build a faith or a relationship on. They are easily and very powerful…but they are transient.

Faith and Love is what you do when you DON’T feel like it. Love is an action and is best expressed when you actually don’t feel like showing it. Faith, like love… is what we do in the meantime, when you don’t ‘feel close to God’
It is easy to follow God when we feel like it. True faith is following him even when we don’t feel like it.
  • It took me a long time to learn this.
Take this to heart and ponder it… RIGHT NOW… this very moment… when you are at your lowest, most depressed, most confused… THIS is when you are walking by faith and not by sight. You can’t see where all this will end up, you don’t know if your relationship with your Mom will improve (you hope) you don’t know if Josh will come back to God and have faith (but you have patience) You don’t feel like praying and going to Church… but you do it because you know it is right.

It is times like these that you ARE expressing true faith…because your emotions make you want to pull away…but you are using your will power to take a step forward.

Pain makes us want to withdraw within… to hide from the world and often times God. But each time we step out of our lonely place and towards the light… we are showing God that we love him more then our selfish selves.

So congratulations… you are showing TRUE faith and love.

Here is something that I hope inspires you…
It is a Poem called “Footprints in the Sand”
footprints-inthe-sand.com/index.php?page=Poem/Poem.php
Summary: A person sees their life as a series of footprints in the sand. Most of the time there are 2 sets, but during the hardest points… only 1 set. The person asks the Lord, “Where were you during the lowest points in my life” to which God replies… “when you see only 1 set… it is because I was carrying you”

You may want to contemplate this prayer:
I asked for strength and
God gave me difficulties to make me strong.
I asked for wisdom and
God gave me problems to solve.
I asked for prosperity and
God gave me brawn and brains to work.
I asked for courage and
God gave me dangers to overcome.
I asked for patience and
God placed me in situations where I was forced to wait.
I asked for love and
God gave me troubled people to help.
I asked for favors and
God gave me opportunities.
I received nothing I wanted
I received everything I needed.
My prayers have all been answered.

If only you had eyes to see! Why could your boyfriend not be a gift from God at this time?
God normally helps us through proximate, human causes rather than outright miracles or prayer rapture.
This is true, he could very well be, I believe that angels walk among us 🙂
We are all human, our parents make mistakes too. Look at the overall big picture of his life and see things in context. Did he love you (he must have to do what he did). This is true also, I have been absent from praying for a long time, but I need to start again to thank God for all he has given me, including the obstacles, and for hope for both of my parents, and all of my family, that we may all make it past the gates of heaven 🙂

I never really thought of it that way. So many of my friends have just completely given up and they just don’t care. But I’ve always known God is out there and never gave up on him…I just lost my footing, like in the poem 🙂
