Broken Lights. Did I do something wrong?

Me and a few others were kicking the ball around before soccer practice in a locker room.
I kicked the ball hard a few times, and it hit some pipes twice, I’m not sure if it hit the lights.

Someone else broke the lights.

I told the coach I might have damaged the pipes, but forgot to tell him I might have hit the lights.

I didn’t tell him who broke the lights.

I also didn’t ask/remind him that there may be mercury in the lights.

Did I fail to do something?
Did I do something wrong?

You are not responsible for what someone else did. You told the coach what you did and that is sufficient. Next time just be a bit more aware of what property might be damaged by your actions. In this case I think that you did what you needed to do and if the coach does not feel that you need to pay for the pipes then I would let it go. As for the lights, if you don’t think that you broke them then you probably didn’t. Again, just be more careful next time… teachccd

Yep, you were intentionally attempting to destroy public property. I suspect you are involved in these activities to gain attention (even when it’s negative attention). Your actions are not what a disciple of Christ should be displaying.

Yep, your actions were juvenile and then you regressed deeper into childhood by not accepting responsibility for the damage you caused.

Yes, if you had prior knowledge that these lights contained mercury and failed to mention the health hazard to those cleaning up your mess.

Mercury poisoning is deadly, ultimately it is the responsibility of the public school administration to properly train their workers about mercury and to address cleanup procedures through MSDS training.

Do you have any idea the damage you can do to a young scrupulous person with a post like this? Intentionally attempting to destroy anyone’s property is the LAST thing this poster would do, as frightened as she is of committing any sin. She took responsibility for hitting the pipes with the ball, which is the only thing she is certain she did. It is most certainly NOT her responsibility to monitor the presence or absence of mercury in the lights in the locker room.

You are assuming that destruction of property was his intention. He never stated that anywhere and from what I read it isn’t likely it is. You have to have the most charitable outlook on a person’s interior motives. The words “I suspect” in this case baffle me, because I suspect nothing of the sort.

Besides what he did may have been stupid, but not sinful. It’s only horseplay. Thank God no one got hurt, though it doesn’t sound like anyone would have.

This would be alright if we knew for sure that the OP did break the lights, but he didn’t. Not only that, but the mercury in lights is not nearly enough to cause one to die.

No, we’re just not inviting those who have no compassion towards someone who recognizes their guilt and is seeking forgiveness. We have no need for those people in our home. At least I don’t. If you read my post I told the OP that s/he needs to make sure that s/he doesn’t do this again. My goodness, do you think that this person came here for a brow beating? And yes, the OP is invited into my home ball and all. At least I know that s/he knows right from wrong unlike those who just throw daggers with no counsel or compassion. Please write back and tell me that you aren’t parents?

If you are parents, please explain your inability to provide this young adult with proper counseling for the negative behavior and action.

Employers aren’t going to spend the time or the money to reparent young adults.

Those decision making skills, were to have been previously taught to them by their parents.

Five year old children know they should not kick a soccer ball inside of a room that is not intended for that use.

Which certainly isn’t the case here. The OP was NOT deliberately and wantonly destroying property, and CERTAINLY NOT doing so because they found the destruction of said property enjoyable.

Have you ever heard the expression “Judge not, lest you yourselves be judged”? You have sought to judge and you yourself have been found wanting by others. I think there’s a lesson for you in all this.

I am a parent, and as such, I know to look beyond the surface when judging an event.

The OP kicked a soccer ball where she should not have kicked it. The ball hit a couple of pipes in the locker room for sure, which she admitted to the coach. A light was broken by a ball kicked by another youth. Those are the certain things that happened. That’s the surface.

Just under the surface, able to be perceived by those who know her or those who are sensitive to the trials of scrupulous people, lie the obsessive concerns that torment the scrupulous. “Did I adequately describe the wrong I did?” “Maybe what I did was worse than I thought!” “Am I responsible for the bad actions of others?” “Is it my fault if something really bad happens, no matter how unlikely?” “Was this a mortal sin?” “Can I be saved?”

As a parent, I know that to go in with guns blazing will do nothing but hurt this young person. It will not inspire her to be more responsible - she’s already hyper-concerned about that. She needs someone to help her calm down, take a breath, and see exactly what happened before she figures out how guilty she is. She does not need someone making assumptions (uncharitable ones at that) about her motives and her maturity or lack thereof.

BarbKW, or BKayW, or whatever name you’re using today, I can understand that, as a business owner, you may have had experiences with irresponsible young people who vandalized your property in order to attract attention to themselves. Perhaps you’re still smarting from a recent incident. However, you are an adult, and should have the wisdom to know that not every instance of property damage is intentional. You identify yourself as a cradle Catholic, so you should know about rash judgement.

You owe the OP an apology.
