I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the Brothers and Sisters of Penance which was refounded as the Confraternity of Penitents?..especially why the BSP was refounded.

Thanks heaps…Blessings and Peace…Barb:)

Hi BarbaraTherese,

I am a full pledged and vowed member of the Confraternity of Penitents. PM me if you have questions.

Both the Confraternity and the BSP live the original 1221 Rule of the the Franciscan Lay Order, adapted to contemporary life. There may be small differences (I haven’t looked). For example, someone mentioned to me that the BSP mitigates the dress code for Sundays and solemnities, while we do not.

The Confraternity is constituted under the vigilance of the Diocese of Providence. I do not know the precise jurisdiction of the BSP, but they are centered in Minnesota. It is my understanding that they ARE properly constituted according to canon law, just as we are.

So, I can tell you about the CFP, but I can’t really give you details about the BSP.

Thank you very much,.Mercygate…what you have related above is pretty much what I already knew. My curiousity is why the BSP was refounded - what problem existed. I am in touch with the BSP and will also get in touch with the CP and see what I can discern. If I have further queries, I will PM you - thank you for the resonse. Blessings and Peace…Barb:)

PS I will return to this thread at some point and give the links to the Brothers and Sisters of Penance as well as The Confraternity of Penance in case there may be interest out there in cyberspace:)
