I hope this is the correct place to ask this but I was wondering if someone could help me here. So I’ve been wearing the brown scapular for about 5 months now but I never was fully enrolled in the Confraternity. I just recently learned you have to have a priest enroll you.
I also learned that by wearing the scapular you are Consecrated to Mary. Am I consecrated even though I have not been officially enrolled? The reason I’m asking is I didn’t know that if you wore the scapular you were Consecrated to Mary, and more recently (2 months ago) I said a prayer “Prayer While Visiting The Most Blessed Sacrament” by St.Alphonsus Liguori that says “…I consecrate myself to you without reserve; I give you my entire will, my affections, my desires, and all that I possess” . Is this ok? How does this work? Am I concentrated twice or something? Is only one valid? Thank you for your time.

I presume you mean “Consecrated” to Mary rather than Concentrated 🙂

You can consecrate yourself to Mary simply by saying, “I consecrate myself to you, Mary.” You don’t need to follow some technical requirement. So if you intended to consecrate yourself to Mary, then you have done so. It doesn’t hurt to renew your consecration to her by saying another consecration prayer any time you like, but it doesn’t invalidate your previous consecration.

You can also practice the spirituality of the Brown Scapular without being enrolled. This just involves things like making your best efforts to attend daily Mass, say daily the Rosary or the Divine Office, imitate Mary in your daily life etc. If you should have a chance to be enrolled, it’s a nice thing to do (many people do it on a visit to a Carmelite monastery or a Marian shrine) but not necessary to wear the Scapular and practice the spirituality.

Hope this helps.

There is a procedure for Blessing and Investiture - you can go to the sisters of Carmel for more information Sisters of Carmel: Information about the Brown Scapular . You do realize there are daily prayers required and you are making promises.

I think there is a more up to date prayer but I am not the one looking. Ask your Priest.

Oops! I was half asleep when I was typing that!! Thank you, and I think I understand know.

Please edit your post and use a different link. That site is from a schismatic group and they aren’t necessarily reliable. Their “instructions” about requirements aren’t accurate, either.

@Shinywooper
There are recommended practices, but as to specific daily requirements, use a more reliable source.

Try something like carmelite.org (avoid the one mentioned above)

Devotion to Our Lady of Mt Carmel

I first started wearing a Brown scapular about 20 years ago. Didn’t know anything about it, didn’t believe in “worshipping” Mary or even praying to her.

Now, there is no doubt in my mind that she (Our Mother) has been working in my life for a very long time. Bringing me to Jesus & the life he wants me to live abundantly.

I’m sure she is working in your life for the very same way.

Are you consecrated to The Blessed Virgin? Wearing the scapular, in my understanding is your recognition of her working in your life. Trusting that she will protect you, feed you, form you… everything you understand the Church does for you, or the Holy Spirit through the Church. With you. Through you. In You.

You are a living stone, a vine grafted onto Christ, through the Church, through Mother Church. You are a member of the body of Christ.

You are consecrated to her if you decide to serve her, imitate her, rely on her.

St Louis de Montford uses the story of Jacob & Esau to illustrate Mary’s role in our lives. She clothes us in Christ & presents us to the Father so we can receive His blessing. I don’t know how to clothe myself in Christ, so I let her (I want to say asked her, but she wanted to before I knew I wanted to be).

Anyway, sorry for the ramble. There is no conflict between Mary & Christ. If you’ve consecrated yourself to Christ, you’ve consecrated yourself to Mary (my understanding). After all, it was Christ seeing His mother standing with the disciple whom He loved that said, “Woman, behold your son.” & to the disciple, “Behold your mother.”

And when you consecrate yourself to Mary you consecrate yourself to Jesus, she only does the Father’s will.

Peace.

As we have stated many times on the forum, Sisters of Carmel are a schismatic group, NOT part of the official Carmelite order, and their pages on the Scapular contain a great deal of misinformation contrary to the official Scapular catechesis published by the Carmelite order. Catholics should NOT be following or reposting the Sisters of Carmel Scapular info. Unfortunately it comes up at the top in Google search so new people are posting it here regularly and we have to keep reposting the warning against it.

The official Scapular Catechesis from the real Carmelite Order is located here:
https://www.meditationsfromcarmel.com/content/scapular-catechesis

As I said, if you want to be properly invested in the Scapular, best bet is to find a Carmelite monastery, or a priest associated with the World Apostolate of Fatima (formerly called the Blue Army).
