Hi, I bought myself a Brown Scapular the other day as I wish to kick start a Marian devotion and I do love the Camelite spirituality and Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
This leads up to my question, how do one use a Brown Scapular?

Should I have it blessed?
Is there any prayers that should be recited daily when wearing it ?

Is there anything else I should know about before using it ?

Yours in the heart of Jesus and Mary

👍

Ive just got mine blessed and I wear it all but when taking a shower or going for a swim. 🙂

This page I believe may also help - freebrownscapular.com/order_page.html (I wear the crusaders brown scapular and I found that ‘medium cord’ is a good length for many people).

God Bless

Thank you for reading

Just wear it such that the rectangular pieces of cloth are on your chest and back.

You should have it blessed, if one was not blessed and invested on you previously.

Saying certain prayers is a pious practice, yet it is not an obligation or necessity. It is not sinful in not saying the prayers.

-You should be invested into the Confraternity of the Scapular by a priest (if there are Carmelite priests in your vicinity, that would be even better, but any priest can invest you into the confraternity).
-The priest investing you will set the required daily prayers you should say–this does not bind under pain of sin, and you can give him (name removed by moderator)ut on what kind of daily discipline would suit you. Traditionally it would have been the Little Office of Our Lady, this is more usually now dispensed to a daily rosary, but psalms, morning and evening prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, or other daily devotions are frequently ascribed.
-It is not a sin not to say the prayers prescribed, but not saying them forfeits the benefits that come from wearing the scapular. But, getting the benefits back is as simple as resuming the prayers.
-Once you are invested, if your scapular gets worn out or breaks, you do not need to have the next one blessed. (This is different from the usual practice with rosaries, crucifixes, etc.)
-If you do not (yet) join the confraternity, you can still wear the scapular and benefit from reading Carmelite writings and practising Carmelite spirituality

When I take mine off for a shower or swimming I kiss it and pray:

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

I kiss it when I put it back on.
