I started teaching CCD this year. I have thought of giving the children small gifts. As my parish does not invest children with the Brown Scapular when they receive their First Holy Communion, I considered giving each a Brown Scapular. However, I am a bit hesitant as the children are so young, ages 5-7 years old.

At what age may children be invested with the Brown Scapular?

It used to be traditional to invest them at the first holy communions. You could also give them blessed Miraculous Medals and explain the story and symbolism in and behind it. Make sure to tell the boys it’s not jewelry.

I don’t think there is an age requirement, but the children should be invested if they wear one. You could give them rosaries and go over the basic prayers with them.

i know i have cherished my brown scapular since the day i made my first communion. however, i could be wrong, but i think it is only a sacramental if a priest gives a person a consecration to wear the scapular.

so i would tell them the story of the brown scapular and if they would like to be consecrated to ask father to consecrate them.

another gift idea is a pendent or holy card of st. nellie. she is the patron saint of first communicants.
