I have some friends from church who often ask me why don’t I wear a scapular and the answer is I don’t understand how a garment can have magical powers. When I ask my fellow catholics why they wear one they say because on the saturday after my death I will be delivered out of purgatory if they are wearing it and have a devotion to Mary. I have real difficulty believing this,so all my initial searching is calling this promise a “sabbatine privilege” but also my research says the church does not endorse this but you can believe it if you want to. HUh? help me understand

Brown Scapular’s are only effective if they are blessed first off, and second they are a sacramental, which means they are only going to be effective if you believe in the promises the Virgin Mary gave with them. And also with the blessing you only need to get one scapular blessed, and all subsequent scapulars you wear will carry the blessing, as the blessing is really imparted on to you, and the scapular is the outward sign that you are wanting to receive the graces the Blessed Mother is willing to give those who are devoted to wearing it.

If you want to read up on it here is a link for you: philomena.org/scapular.asp

Also remember you are not required to believe in this private revelation, but I would really recommend that you try to, church approval of something is quite an endorsement that should not be overlooked!

So the church teaches that the sabbatine privilege is official teaching?

It has no magical power. It is simply a devotion- by wearing it, you signal your dedication to Our Lady. It has no power in itself if I am correct, yet it signals Mary that we are open to her help.

Re: Brown Scapular. I simply wear it as a reminder of my consecration to Jesus through Mary’s Immaculate Heart. As a recovering “scrupe”, I have to fight the temptation of worry over my salvation every day. The Good News: God is Merciful, slow to anger and quick to forgive. Just turn to Him. Put your salvation in His hands and those of His holy mother who is perfectly aligned with the Will of God. Or, as St. Pio once famously said: “Pray, Hope and Don’t Worry!”

No magical powers attached to the scapular. If anyone thinks by simply wearing the scapular they will be spared hell, they are truly mistaken. First, you must be enrolled in the scapular. Also, The Blessed Virgin assigned certain conditions which must be fulfilled:

Wear the Brown Scapular continuously.
Observe chastity according to one’s state in life (married/single).
Recite daily the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin OR Observe the fasts of the Church together with abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays OR With permission of a priest, say five decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy Rosary OR With permission of a priest, substitute some other good work.
