No. It can be made of any dark brown material. Mine is made from a worn out habit and is made of cotton. Also, you can make your own, if you wish. All that is required is the dark brown cloth and two strings to attach them, which can be any color. If you have been enrolled you can wear it without getting it blessed because the blessing resides on the person not the scapular.

I only take mine off when I take a shower. Hope I don’t slip and pass away in there.😃

Does anyone know what to do with an old scapular when I purchase a new one for myself? I usually get the one connected by a metal chain and occasionally the chain breaks.
 
I was told that once you are enrolled, you can switch to the scapular medal but, you must have the medal blessed by a priest.
