Hello CAF!

Yesterday a friend gave me this brown scapular: saccoscom.x-shops.com/images/T/t-19412-1787.jpeg

For a while I’ve had a desire to wear a brown scapular, but it kept getting pushed aside. I am already enrolled in the green scapular and wear it 24/7. Do I have to re-enroll with the brown scapular? I know each scapular also comes with requirements. I searched the forums for that already, but I found conflicting information.

I also wanted to ask if anyone else is faced with the “problem” of having three or four chains around their neck? I combined all my saint medals onto one chain, then I have my crucifix, and now I have my scapular. :D:D

Thank you!

Yes, I believe you need to re-enroll, as the Brown Scapular is technically separate from the Green. You could also look into getting a 5-fold scapular if you are concerned about having too many things around your neck. 😃

To be clear, I know of no enrollment or investiture for the Green Scapular. It is separate from the Brown Scapular, which one is invested in, usually at First Communion. One enrolled in the Brown Scapular, you never need to re-enroll.

The Green Scapular is blessed by the priest. The Brown Scapular does not need to be blessed, except at the initial enrollment. After that, the blessing follows the enrollee. So, after your Brown Scapular is worn and broken, you burn it and when you first wear your new scapular, it becomes blessed by virtue of the act of your wearing it, much like the vestments of the priest. It is actually a vestment which, through a Carmelite indult, has been extended to the non-Carmelite.

Good point!
:eek::eek: I didn’t even know that was a thing! I’ll check it out! 😛

My Green Scapular has been blessed and I’ve worn it for some time now. Is the Brown Scapular enrollment something I could ask my parish priest about? Or does it have to be performed by someone specific (a Carmelite)?

porthos11 in Post #2 gave you a link to the official Carmelite document on the Brown Scapular. You should read it. Your question will be answered there.

You don’t have to wear the Green Scapular, it can be carried in your purse. I also have one in my bedroom. But you do have to wear the Brown Scapular. I would prefer being enrolled by a priest.

GiuseppeTO would be the best person to answer this, but I’d like to put in my two cents. 🙂

I don’t think the Brown Scapular enrollment need be performed by a specific priest. I was enrolled right after I was baptized (received first Holy Communion a few days later) by an SSPX priest. When I asked about blessing the scapular he gave me to wear, he said (I hope I’m remembering this correctly) that it’s the person who is blessed, not the scapular.
