Brown Scapular Questions

When I was enrolled into the Brown Scapular, the priest said that we could either say the Little Office or fast on Wednesdays & Saturdays. Also, with the permission of our pastor, we could substitute a daily rosary instead of the Little Office.

If one misses a day of fasting, does one “make that up” via three or four days of saying the rosary?

If I didn’t fast that day, I would count say the Rosary that day or just count it a loss . .

Well, it APPEARS that two days of fasting is the same as seven days of rosaries. Thus, wouldn’t one missed day of fasting require three or four days of rosaries?

Ah, but you’ve made a promise, when invested with it, haven’t you? That’s the way I understood it.

I don’t believe that we made a BINDING promise. My understanding is that IF we do “these things”, our Blessed Mother will do “these other things” in return.

I’m just looking for ways to STILL keep my end of the promise if circumstances interfer.

You might be picking me up wrongly here. What does it matter if the promise is binding or not?

I’m not saying to not do it is mortally sinful. But it may be a venial sin of omission. There is no harm in taking that to the Confessional.

Your devotion and concern of doing something wrong is very nice. I am not sure exactly what you need to do but I suggest you pray. Or if your uncertain maybe do everything on one day. For instance Saturday, it is Mary’s Holy Day and a rosary is said anyhow. Maybe on Saturday you should fast, do the office and a full rosary ( 15 decades) All those things together would show much devotion.

This fasting is all well and good but I can’t do it for health reasons so I just stick to the Rosary and the Divine Office.

What does it matter if the promise is binding or not?

What does binding mean?

Does it mean “under pain of sin” ?

if so, that would be the difference.

I am talking about what I see as the heart of devotion, and the heart of a promise. In that, we freely assent to doing something, and promise to do it. We should then feel a certain sadness when it does not happen, and to an extent it could be argued, where deliberate or not planned against, to be a type of a very minor venial sin of omission.
