Brown Scapular Re-investment Question

I was invested into the Brown Scapular about two years ago by a Carmelite Friar, but now I fear that my investment may not have been valid due to my being in a state of mortal sin at the time.

Should I be re-invested?

Also, can one go through a re-investment, even when valid, for nostaglia’s sake?

Though I just read a couple of things about it and I don’t think it matters whether you were in mortal sin or not. But hey, you can always talk to your local priest about it.

As the enrollment in the scapular is not a Sacrament, I doubt there was a problem. Indeed, it may have been grace provided by this enrollment that got you back to Confession in the first place.

I definately believe that!

My enrollment came at a time when I was just starting to call myself Catholic again, after being away for a while, and I’ve always attributed my conversion to Our Blessed Mother through the Carmelite spirituality.

AFAIK, reinvestment is not necessary. People occasionally ask about it when acquiring a new scapular to replace their old, worn out one. Since scapulars aren’t blessed (like a rosary or crucifix might be) you just get a new one and wear it.

Only the first scapular is blessed…after that the blessing just automatically passes to the next one you wear that replaces the original,and so on.

If you wear the Scapular medal and lose it, then that must be blessed again.

Actually I was looking to re-invest for more along the lines of a renewal, as the Scapular Confraternity Book tells us that we should renew our promise occationally.

Maybe the renewal is the same as an investment, but for people already vested.

My wife and I recently went through a renewal of our wedding vows.

Franciscan Friars will repeat their vows annually.

Is it necessary? Nope. I’d still be married without the renewal. But, it was an awesome spiritual experience.

I am not aware of a prohibition against a re-investment. Will it help you spiritually?

(I do wear the brown scapular 24/7. How has it been for you these past 2 years?)

From what I see here, perhaps a renewal would in fact help you greatly. It will spring board you away from the evil one into holiness. It feels like a good choice to me.

I like to do a renewal of my enrollment (telling the priest that I have been enrolled) when possible on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which is in July. So - I think it’s OK if it will help you to renew it - then there is nothing to worry about, certainly.

You are fine, you don’t need to be re-invested.

But you can be!

How were you invested? If it was in the newer way, you could find a priest to do it again using the traditional Ritual and in Latin … it will feel different that way, even though both forms do the same thing.
