I am in RCIA and can’t wait to be fully accepted into the Catholic Church. I started praying the rosary daily in September and have since been made aware of the ‘Brown Scapular’ promises and would like to be enrolled in the confraternity of the Brown Scapular.

My question:

Do I have to wait until April when I become Catholic to be enrolled in the confraternity and receive the special benefits, or can I enroll right now?

Thanks for your time

A priest sent me one when I was not Catholic.

Welcome home! Congratulations on going through RCIA!

A non catholic can wear the brown scapular. Nevertheless, I believe you have to be Catholic to be installed in the confraternity of the brown scapular.

this is correct.

but you can still wear one 🙂

I just had to chime in and raise my hand, another fellow RCIAer-catechumen and I wear the brown scauplar. I have been wearing it since early summer.

You can also have it blessed by your priest, but as the previous poster said we must wait until we are Catholic to be enrolled.

But all the same, WELCOME!

Cool… my Catholic girlfriend got her and me a brown scapular yesterday after I mentioned it to her a lot… and I had mine it beside my bed last night and couldn’t help but put it on. I’m wearing it for now because it reminds me of Mary and helps me with certain temptations, even if it doesn’t have the attached promises yet. When it does I’ll love it all the more!

Thanks for the info.

The brown scapular is a sacramental, not a sacrament. You can wear the scapular even before you become a Catholic.
