Could somene explain it to me? What should I say when friends ask about it?
 
A scapular is a part of a religious habit; the Brown Scapular in particular is a piece of the Carmelite habit. It is a sign of consecration to the Blessed Mother (and one cannot be consecrated to her without also being consecrated to her Son) and a symbol of devotion to her. She is said to have appeared to St. Simon Stock in 1251 and promised him that those who died wearing her Scapular (that is, those who persevered in her devotion and did not count on the Scapular as a magic amulet) would be preserved from Hell. She is also said to have promised that all who wore the Scapular and persevered in the particular devotions connected with it would be rescued from Purgatory on the first Saturday after death (the Sabbatine Privilege). There are many miracles associated with the Brown Scapular, and Our Lady of Fatima asked people to wear the Scapular (and, of course, pray the Rosary every day). When I was a kid, all of us were invested in the Brown Scapular around the time we received our first Holy Communion.

Well friend, I will say the Brown Scapular first is a gift to us from the Blessed Mother who was gifted to us. The Scapular is a prayer, a visible sign of a persons devotion and a way to draw closer to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts.

Just as I would proudly introduce any friend to my mother, I would and will gladly introduce anyone willing to listen to our Blessed Mother. By wearing the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, I/you bear witness to our love, honor and devotion to the Theotokos, the Mother of God.

There are and will be people who question this devotion, some who will say we worship the Blessed Mother by this and other devotions. This is not so. Our Blessed Lord while on the Cross looked to His Mother and the Apostle John and said,
26 When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son. 27 After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own.

We see in these verses from chapter 19 of the Holy Gospel according to St. John that our Blessed Mother was given to us by our Blessed Lord himself.

It is best, I believe to charitably explain what and why we believe what we believe, but not to get into debates over the subject. Our Blessed Mother will triumph one day and those who doubt and those who viciously attack her will be among the first after satan to be cast in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone.
