I have several qustions about the Brown Scapular. I try looking online, however, I have had trouble finding information on the web that is offical church teaching. I go online and I often find information that is contradictory. But I trust the people on this site…

I believe that about 6 months ago I started to develope a relatonsihp with Mary. She was begining to reach out to me…long story short, I got scared because I was afraid I was all of a sudden worshiping her and Not God (still kind of scared about that). So I prayed to her, kind of asked her , politely, to please leave me alone and go away…(yea i know…)

a few weeks ago, Mary started comeing back into my life, because I prayed for it a little bit, and I started whreing the Miraculous Medal… anways, I cant explain everything, but with in the past few weeks Mary has begun to reach out to me again. and I encounterd someone who changed my life a little bit in 3 hours, talking about mary. I dont want to get into it, but i know now it was a message from God pointing me to Mary.

Anyways, without thinking about it, I go to the store and buy a Rosary…then the next day, i go to the store again, and i came across the brown scapular that has imiages on it of Our Lady of Lourdes, which just happens to be what my parishes Grotto is based off of, and hapens to be the place where I met that women who changed me in that 3 hour conversaton…

anways, i decided to buy that scapualr. I keep goign back and fourth on it. Ive read a little bit about it, but Im confused and have qustions…

What does it mean to be enrolled in it? and to be enrolled in the carmelite order…does this mean you become apart of that order or something? what kind of priest enrolls you or blesses it or w/e, is it your diocene preist, or does it have to be someone from the carmelite order? I already know the requirements for reciveing the graces and promise from it ( i know its not a magic charm like the miraculous medal), but actualy wondering how many people actualy are devoted to mary in this way…

I feel stupid for asking, but ive read that you must where this at all times…does this include showering and swimming? or when those times, do you just put on the medal in “replacement” of that? I already read somewere that a previous pope said that you should always where the cloth and not the medal unless you have a very good, legit, reason.

I just got enrolled in it myself like a month and a half ago. My situation was kind of like yours, where I kept being drawn to Mary and felt the same way (although I didn’t ask her to go away lol). God has made some things clear to me in my own life regarding this, so be patient and God will help you understand too.

As far as being enrolled, it means that you are devoted to Jesus through Mary.

I think you’re confusing two different things. While the Brown Scapular is associated with the Carmelite order, I think you may be thinking that being enrolled in the Brown Scapular means getting becoming a 3rd order Carmelite, which it doesn’t. While those in the 3rd order where a scapular too, they generally wear a larger one I believe, and have more devotions that they do, they actually become Carmelites.

Any priest can enroll you, make sure that whenever you are enrolled you bring along the prayers because some priests may not have them handy at the time. You can get the enrollment prayers off the net- sistersofcarmel.com/brown-scapular-information.php (this is also where I get my Scapulars from (you’ll want more than one as they wear out eventually, and once you’re enrolled you don’t take off the scapular-but you only need one blessed)

Me 👋
The Scapular is a reminder of our devotion. I pray either the LOTH daily or the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary and I pray the Rosary daily. It also helps me to remember to dress modestly

Don’t feel stupid, I asked the SAME exact question of a priest in a confessional. God had been telling me for months to be enrolled in the Brown Scapular at multiple parishes, in different states from priests who didn’t even know me… they would suddenly say I should be enrolled in the Brown Scapular and I was like “whoa” but it happened so often that when I was in the confessional and this priest (who I’d never spoken to before) asked if I was wearing my Brown Scapular I just told him I had it in my purse and hadn’t been enrolled yet… then he answered all my questions. (I normally don’t get into major Q&A in the confessional so I thought I’d explain what happened lol).
Anyway, he explained that it must be the cloth Scapular, not the medal one even for swimming and showering etc. This is why I have multiple Scapulars… I have one for the gym (I’m a fitness freak and get sweaty and swim)…I use that same one for showering etc. I have another for when I’m just in regular clothes. I just switch them out when needed, put one on and take the other off. I haven’t had mine off since I first had it put on me.
I did buy the medal for the same reason you were asking about, but after the priest told me only the cloth I have just stuck with that.
I hope that answers your questions. Let me know if you have anymore k?

I have to admit, i honestly dont like that about the showering / swimming…thats a sure way to ruin that cloth, not to mention it be wet all the time, especialy if you shower twice a day… even if you had multiple it would be rediculous… i understand if your not wet or anything, but especial if your swimming, the medal makes sence…

My wife and I went out and purchased 25 Brown Scapulars several monthe ago and have finally convinced our priest to offer the Investiture next weekend. Then we decided to make sure that the parish had enough so we ordered 100 more. Its been a fair number of years since this was offered at our OF parish.

I’ve worn mine in the shower and at the gym and everything for 1 1/2 months now and it’s still fine (shrunk a tiny bit but not much). It doesn’t stay wet all the time either, when I am drying off I just put one side in the towel and squeeze and then the other side, it gets all the water out.

Yay! I know before I asked my priest to enroll me someone at my parish said “oh, nobody does that anymore” and I was like “well, I’m going to” lol
I have a home parish (OF) and a second home parish (EF), that I go to weekly. At the EF parish I see some people there wearing the Brown Scapular but that comment above came from the OF parish. Granted I have no idea if anyone there wears one or not other than me, but from what I can tell, it doesn’t look like it.
I’m so happy that your parish will be offering this 🙂

Good show!

I pray more people do so!

whats an OF and EF parish?
Oh sorry, I’m used to the terms cause most on here use them.
OF= Ordinary Form (English Mass, or as some call it Novus Ordo)
EF= Extraordinary Form (Latin Mass, or as some call it Tridentine Rite)
