I bought a brown scapular a while ago. I am currently seeking to get it imposed and enrolled. I tried several priests (my pastor was too busy handinmg out flowers on mothers day :rolleyes: ) and I need to get it imposed soon. I pray a rosary daily, and live chastely according to my station in life. The priest seems to continuously evade me so I can have my scapular enrolled (he is quite liberal). How should I talk to him?
 
First I would ask him to bless the scapular if this is the first one you have ever had. Next I would make an appointment with him at a specific time for you to be enrolled in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular. It is a short ceremony so it should be of no time constraint to the priest.

Can you ask around and find out if there is another priest at another parish that would like very much to do this for you?

The best time wouldn’t be right after Mass, as he is greeting everyone. :rolleyes:

(The eyeroll, is probably inappropriate here, but it shows you, how your pastor might feel, if you showed your displeasure by giving him an eyeroll, simply because he was busy greeting the mothers of his parish. :()

It would be best to make an appointment with him, letting him know before hand what you want done.

I would try aind a more traditionally-minded priest, make an appointment, or better yet, have it done on the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (July 16th).

I received some Brown Scapulars in the mail on a Saturday and determined to ask my priest to enroll me the next day after mass. I even printed out the rite just in case he had no idea what I was talking about. I started to ask him if I could make an appointment when he was not busy during the day but we were interrupted by several people who wanted to talk to him so I stood quietly nearby for about half an hour and waited to finish our conversation.

Finally I had my chance and explained what I wanted, and he said he had no time that day because he had to leave soon. So we scheduled an appointment for the following Thursday. I gave him my printed copy of the rite which he reluctantly received. I was disappointed but at least had the hope that it would be done on Thursday.

On Wednesday night he called me and said that this would probably be impossible because he didn’t think he was authorized to do this but would call the Carmelite Monastery in Tokyo to ask them about it. He would get back to me the next day if he managed to communicate the the Carmelite priests.

I was once again disappointed because he sounded very pessimistic. But the next day he called me and said it was OK to come to church and be enrolled. So I got on the subway and got enrolled before he had to go away for another appointment.

I got enrolled and offered to give my priest some of my extra brown scapulars but he said he already had one somewhere, but never bothered with the enrollment.

Later that day I looked at my calendar and discovered that this day was the feast day of St. Simon Stock! All these little delays and disappointments had a meaning after all.

I forgot to ask him about substituting the Rosary for the Little Office, and when I tried to bring it up the following Sunday he refused to even hear me and said I should ask the Carmelite priests at the Monastery (which is on the other side of town). I guess he can’t be bothered with these things…

Anyway, my point is that even with a very reluctant priest, Mother Mary allowed me to get enrolled and added a special touch just to show this wasn’t a random chain of events. It’s good to know that if you want to be enrolled, your powerful Mother wants you to be enrolled even more, and she will see to it that you do get enrolled.

But Where did you find a Brown Scapular online??? I’ve been searching for them FOREVER. I have found every kind but the brown kind!!! I have one that I am currently wearing but the picture has been sweated off!!!

Few questions, is it bad to wear one with the picture sweated off from wearing? Are these other kinds valid (the St. Michael one…ect?) And does anyone know where I can find a BROWN Scapular online? I’m a girl so I know it should be brown and the black is for the boys, question, why do the boys get a black one and not a brown one?🤷

The Scapular is fine as long as it is not broken. Worn is OK. There are sites that sell Scapulars, just Google it.

I did, that’s why I’m asking. I couldn’t find the Brown one, but I found them in every color but. And for every saint but the traditional one of St. Simon and the Virgin of Mount St. Carmel??? Maybe I should look harder?🤷

Just Google Brown Scapulars For Sale and you should be good to go.
 
Sorry I didn’t reply right away. I was looking for this thread in the “Spirituality” forum and was hopelessly lost for a while.

I prefer a simple cross on my brown scapular and found two online vendors that had exactly what I wanted:

The first one (John Hetzer) requires a little personal contact in the form of an e-mail, but that’s a good thing because you will be better informed after corresponding with them.
 
By the way I have read somewhere that the Carmelites actually have a preference for scapulars with no images at all, so your sweated-off blank scapular would make them happy. 🙂 I prefer brown although I have read that black is permissible. Can’t imagine calling a black scapular brown…

If you have problems I will get you some gratis [PM me], they will come from Aylesford Priory - where I was privileged to receive my 1st Profession into 3rd. Order Carmelites [in front of a major reliquary of Saint Simon Stock - ‘believed to contain his skull’], just after Holy Mass.

Google: ‘The Friars - Aylesford’ for a peek at the place, it goes back to the 13th century.

Thanks! I feel honored that you replied! Wow, I’ve heard that they keep the Saints bones, but to be honest, I never believed it. What was that like? Why do they keep the bones? Is it a connection, power in the bones, so to speak? I wouldn’t mind sending some money to receive on from your order. If you wouldn’t mind, I’ll pm. While you are here, Why do boys have to wear a black scapular instead of a brown one? I never understood that?:confused:
 
I’m hoping resurrecting an old thread is better than starting a new one. But, I had a question (similar to one I’ve asked before) about the Brown Scapular. If I’ve failed to live up to any obligations of the scapular, even though I’ve previously been enrolled, would confession to my priest be enough to re-gain the privileges associated with the scapular or would I need a re-enrollment or some other form of consecration?
 
Formal Confession should be fine - and no, regarding enrollment, you remain enrolled until you voluntarly resign/reject it. Best practice is to regularly go to Confession if possible, even when your sins may appear trivial.
 
so if you’re enrolled by a Priest you may need to be enrolled again if you don’t wear it for a some time?

As I understand it not wearing it doesn’t automatically unenrol you, but it will of course deny you certitude of the ‘wearing’ promises. You need to consciously reject enrollment/membership in order for enrollment to cease - which I course I don’t recommend!
