I was recently enrolled in the Brown Scapular. Regarding the Little Office vs permission to substitute the Rosary thing - I already did, and continue to, pray both. That being said, I am not always able to pray the whole Little Office in a day depending on my schedule. I do not know for sure if the priest who enrolled me gave me “permission” to substitute the rosary. At the enrollment he did ask if I prayed, and would pray, the rosary daily - after the fact I realized that I have no idea whether that “counted” or if such a dispensation is a more formal thing. I’m not trying to be nitpicky or anything, I just like to have my bases covered.

Another question: if one who is enrolled in the Brown Scapular chooses not to substitute the rosary, must it always be the Little Office or may the Liturgy of the Hours be prayed sometimes (or all the time) instead? Many folks like the LotH but to pray both that and the LO of the BVM for the average Catholic is a lot of time.

Thanks for your responses!

My understanding is that you do any sort of devotion in place of the Little Office of the BVM with your priest’s permission (including simply devoutly kissing your scapular every day).

From what you said, it doesn’t seem to me that the priest was directly giving you permission to say the rosary instead, but it’s unclear. My priest didn’t say that part during the enrollment. 🤷

Here is the official catechesis on the Brown Scapular presented by both branches of the Carmelite Order:
