Brown Scapular

The wife and I have received two of these and are curious about the blessing required. Included with the scapulars is a blessing that is do be done by the Priest in the presence of the wearer.

Is this particular blessing required? Or does the traditional Priest blessing suffice?

We actually had a “Brown Scapular” Mass at our parish and everyone who attended and recieved a Scapular was enrolled.
 
The blessing by the way, covers the wearer, not the scapular, meaning, if it breaks or wears out, you may put a new one on, and not need to have it re-blessed. Mine never leaves me. It is a good conversation piece too by the way, a good way to open up conversations when they ask about it.👍
 
For the original question, no, it is not blessed like other sacramentals. I wear three scapulars myself (brown/OL of Mt. Carmel, blue/Immaculate Conception, and red/Passion) and they all had their own little rite of enrollment–one or more involved holy water sprinklings (I can’t remember now which one!).

As an aside, I used to think I was weird for wearing three–but then I learned St. Alphonsus Liguori wore four 😃 ! (brown, blue, black/OL of Sorrows, and white/Trinity).
 
I wear one, and am enrolled however I continuously have forgotten to ask - how does one pray the little office of the BVM? I have done a websearch (using prolifesearch.com)), however I was intimidated by the page I found on it…I didn’t see any divisions for different days & the page made it look like it was going on FOREVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR 😊

I was enrolled in the Brown Scapular by the monsignor after I made my first Communion. I never understood it and never wore it for the next 25 years. We had an adult education class at my parish, and I asked my pastor about it. He explained it. Then a friend of mine from church gave me a little tract that also explained the Brown Scapular. That was about 5 years ago. Since then, I always wear it and say prayers daily to Mary. I have since replaced the Scapulars 3 times. I think my next one will be a Scapular Medal, which I will take to my pastor to be blessed, since I keep breaking the cloth Scapulars.

Careful! Scapular medals aren’t as effective as the regular one & you don’t get an indulgence for kissing it!

I thought the medal was ok if approved and blessed by a priest. I know replacement cloth scapulars do not need to be blessed but the medals do.

It’s pretty simple–at least compared to the “big” Office.

It’s “okay”, however you don’t get the indulgence for kissing it, & it is usually disapproved of because - well some people would probably use it to hide their devotion to mary. The only instance where I think it is truelly acceptable is when it would be dangerous to where a clothe scapular (like a working environment).

:confused: Nobody sees the cloth scapular either, since it is worn under clothing. If anything, the scapular medal would be more visible if worn on a chain around the neck and not hidden under clothing.
 
There isn’t much wrong with the medal, but there’s the idea that by wearing it one is sort of hiding the identity of the scapular. It becomes just some regular necklace, which is obviously far from true, so I say do not be too timid to proclaim it. Wear the woolen scapular, it’s just simply a better reminder of the yoke which you bear upon your shoulders. I do not often see pictures of Mary holding silver chains with medals on them, always the woolen scapular.

The medal was not meant to be a simple substitute for the cloth scapular. It was originally commissioned by St. Pius X for those who could not wear the scapular due to military regulations in certain countries. While nowadays they are treated as interchangeable, I think the best policy is to wear Mary’s garment unless it’s very, very impractical.

I have yet to find one that does not quickly break. I am currently unemployed, but I used to work in a factory.

I have found that if you tie a knot about midway through the cord so that it appears that the scapular is handing from one string that they last longer. Mine usually last about 6-8 months and I never take them off.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that the rosary can be said in replacement of the little office of the BVM.

As far as I know all you need is 7 Hail Marys, 7 Glory be-s, and 7 Our Fathers.

When I receive the Brown Scapula from Camelite Sisters, the instruction says that we need to pray the Little Office, if we want to pray the rosary or the other one that you mentioned, we need to ask permission from your pastor.
