Brown Scapular

I have been enrolled in the Brown Scapular for almost 8 years. I take it off when I bathe and swim. I also wear a chain with a Miraculous Medal, the Cross I recieved from my grandmother on my Confirmation and a Scauplar Medal so when I do take off my cloth scapular, the medal suffices until I put the cloth back on.

Some of you make take issue with this, but I usually take the cloth scapular off when going to bed simply because I don’t want to get the cloth scapular tangled up and/or uncomfortably tangled on my neck. It stays right on the bed side table next to me and I sleep with the scapular medal etc on. It also lasts longer if I take a little extra care with it.

I think if you use the scapular medal in this fashion then you avoid the problems of trying to ‘hide’ the fact that you wear a scapular. I use it for what I consider practical occasions.

Does anyone know exactly how much of the LOBVM you need to pray for it to count? Do I need to do all seven of the hours every day or would it be alright if I just did Morning and Evening Prayer?

Also, if I pray the LOTH (or just Shorter Christian Prayer) daily, does that count?

Thx
God Bless,

Perhaps I’m a realist. I know I’m not going to heaven directly, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t care about purgatory. I do, but I don’t think not wearing the scapular when one happens to die is any real threat to my salvation.
Of course not. The scapular is a private devotion and like any private devotion it is not required for all believers. We know that there are many Saints in heaven who never wore a scapular, so obviously it can’t be required. However, like any other devotion, it can’t hurt either. For those who are enrolled, it is a comfort. As another pp said, it’s similar to wearing a locket with a picture of a loved one. If you were enrolled and now choose not to actually wear the scapular, that is your decision. I just hope that you continue your private devotional prayers like the Morning Offering, rosary or LOTHs.

I have some related questions. Please answer if you know…

First, does the cloth scapular have to have anything specific on it like the medal does? Mine has a simple cross stitched in, but I see they make them with many other things stitched in.

Second, if the cloth scapular frays is it okay to trim it? Should the trimmings be burned?

Thanks,
