Can someone please explain where the belief in the salvific effect of wearing a brown scapular on your deathbed came from? Does the wearer’s salvation still depend on whether or not they’ve repented of their sins, or is the belief that you can sin all you want, have no faith, and then wear the scapular upon death and be fine?

No, it doesn’t mean that. You must have faith, and must repent.

The brown scapular should not be worn as a charm but instead to foster a greater devotion to Our Lady as well as God.
