I was thinking about buying one and read that Mary promised all who wear it won’t burn in hell.

Also there’s lots of confusing info like you have to be in this order to wear one, if not the consequences are bad, stuff like that. I’m still “officially” Protestant but I do the Catholic prayers and stuff.

So kind of confused about it. I know it’s not “magic” and all but a good reminder of devotion to God.

 Thanks for the help!

"Take this Scapular, it shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and a pledge of
peace. Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.” This is Mary’s
promise made July 16, 1251 to Saint Simon Stock. This promise is dependent on our living out our baptismal vows–to live for Christ in holiness and love.

That’s not true. 🙂 Anyone may wear the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In order to receive the most graces of the scapular, one should be enrolled in the confraternity of OLOMC or be a member of the Lay Carmelites. Even so, God grants his graces to all who seek him, so one need not be enrolled to be a devotee of Our Lady and receive her intercession.

Catholic devotions are called sacramentals. They are meant to be aids to our faith, so it’s great that you are doing them. 👍

I hope I have helped clear up your confusion. Remember that God is and that he is the rewarder of those who seek him. So, as you reach out to him, you’ll find he’s already reached out to you. He wishes that all men be saved and so turns away no one who seeks him. If we can help you on your faith journey, just let us know. :tiphat:

Well, the brown scapular is an excellent devotion. I think if you feel a desire to wear it, then Mary is drawing you nearer to her Son and to the Catholic Church.

You can go ahead and wear one, but it might not be exactly the same for you, since you are not yet Catholic.

We Catholics need to be invested in the brown scapular which is a special deal and different from just having a priest bless the scapular.

However, I’d recommend that you ask a Catholic priest to bless it for you. You’ll have to explain to him that you’re not Catholic but I think he would still bless it for you. I’m not sure however if he could invest you in the scapular, however. I myself, though loving Carmelites and Our Lady have never been invested in it myself.

I wear what is called the Miraculous Medal of Our Lady…a close cousin in devotions if you will. 🙂

God Bless You! I’d encourage you to go forward with it in some way.

As far as being invested in the scapular goes, that’s investment in a confraternity, so that would have to wait until conversion. It was once common to invest all in it at the time of First Communion or Confirmation. I think it’s a pity that that tradition has fallen by the wayside.

However, one needn’t be invested, or even Catholic for that matter, to wear the Brown Scapular. Bad things will certainly NOT happen to you! By all means become when you enter the Church so as to benefit from the indulgences and so forth. But you’re doing nothing wrong by simply wearing one now.

God bless.
