Yesterday I watched the Mass on EWTN. The celebrant was wearing BROWN vestment, serioiusly. Is this something new? I checked my set and it was ok.

Was it a Veteran’s Day recorded Mass? I’ve seen camouflage vestments used in the field, which may have come across on TV as brown-ish.

The MFVA habits are brown and white, is that what you saw?

I’m not aware of any rubrics permitting camouflage-colored vestments in lieu of solid-colored ones.

No it was just the usual Mass vestments, hauuble stole etc.He did mention a few martyrs. But I always thought their colour was red.

Well, that is odd; under normal circumstances, nobody will be able to see the stole, because it is under the chasuble. A little might peek out at the neck, maybe.

Wouldn’t be the first priest to insist on wearing his stole over the chasuble, but that doesn’t explain the color.

I am not sure what you mean by “yesterday” since I don’t know what time zone you are in relative to when you were posting. I consulted the video archive for EWTN and the Mass on November 11 was celebrated while wearing a white chasuble. November 12, the celebrant wore a very deep red vestment, no doubt because it was the feast of Saint Josaphat the martyr. November 13 was white since the Americans were celebrating Mother Cabrini.

However, the Mass celebrated on November 14 has a celebrant wearing a chasuble that I gather is supposed to be green, since he references Ordinary Time. I wonder if perhaps they used the provision to substitute a more solemn chasuble and this chasuble is actually supposed to be gold. It is difficult to tell what is happening since there would have been studio lighting for filming. There certainly seems to be a significant amount of metallic thread in the chasuble that is causing a sort of sheen to the fabric; the pattern of the hue changes as the fabric moves under the light and causes shadows that do create a brownish quality on the screen. It is hard for me to speculate what this vestment might look like in natural light.

I remember a parish where I used to celebrate Mass once having a chasuble of similar type. It was supposed to be a deep olive and looked such to the naked eye but in photographs would appear not green at all.

The priest is wearing the stole under the chasuble; it is visible in shots where he is walking.

I just downloaded the video of that mass’ homily. The chasuble could be called brown, but it’s more likely gold.
