Brushing Up on My History

Does anyone here have a thorough, but not too dense book that explains the entire history of the Church well?

Justo L. Gonzales wrote an excellent book we used as a textbook in School. Bruce Shelby wrote Church History in Plain Language.

Second the suggestion. Crocker wrote in a way that the non-scholar can understand.

Church History in Plain Language isn’t bad, but it was written from a Protestant POV, altho not blatantly so.

It’s not as thin as some books, but I really enjoyed A Concise History of the Catholic Church by Thomas Bokenkotter. You really can’t get a thorough enough treatment from a smaller book.

I’ve also started The Catholic Church Through the Ages by John Vidmar. What I like about this is that though it’s a pretty small book it gives a list of other sources to follow up with for each time period that it covers.

I thought he was fair, including history that both Protestants and Catholics might not like.
