Except that the four noble truths express the doctrine of reincarnation…

And the eightfold path expresses the doctrine that the individual saves himself…

…other than that, it’s totally like Christianity! 😉

Not in so many words:
  • Suffering exists.
  • Suffering is caused by selfish desire.
  • Eliminating the desire eliminates suffering.
  • The way to eliminate desire is to follow the eightfold path.
Reincarnation is more assumed than explicitly stated.
And the eightfold path expresses the doctrine that the individual saves himself…
Yes. You have to attain enlightenment for yourself, nobody else can do it for you: “Hey, I’m hungry. Could you eat a sandwich for me so I don’t feel hungry any more.”

Much of what is on the eightfold path echoes the Ten Commandments, with more emphasis on meditation and much less on which gods to worship (or not).
“Love others as you love yourself.” – Bhadramayakaravyakarana sutra, 91

Whereas, from the Christian perspective, it’s “Hey, I’m hungry. But there’s no food here that can fill my needs.” And God says, “Here – I will give you the bread of life, so that you might never be hungry. You have to eat it yourself, of course, but here it is…” 😉

There are similarities and differences. Earlier I said we need to clarify categories. We are slowly spelling out the many ways we can look and compare them. Moral ethic- similar, eschatology-different, soteriology-different, psychology- not so different, anthropology- open to interpretation.

This is very much the level i was thinking at. I wonder how to re-write these for other religions:
“Suffering is caused by not following Gods Law” - Judaism
“Suffering is caused by not following Gods prophet” - Islam
???
