Buddhism under Ngo Dinh Diem reign

I was just reading about the horrible treatment of Buddhists in South Vietnam in the early 1960s

Just wondering if the Vatican ever issued any official statement on Ngo Dinh Diem (and his archbishop brother) and his deplorable treatment of the Buddhist population of South Vietnam?
Yes, he was anti-communist, anti-abortion, etc. but surely his bigoted attitude, corrupt political practices, and outright cruelty demonstrates a complete lack of true Catholic morals.

Or maybe Catholicism just wasn’t MEANT to be a theocracy. “Render unto Caesar”…

The Church has apologized for the inquisition and other historical wrong-doings, why not for supporting one of the 20th century’s most corrupt leaders?

I think it’s easier to apologize for things that happened a very long time ago. From a practical perspective for a large international concern like the Catholic Church, there are too many potential liabilities to apologize for anything that recent. Also, with an organization as large as this, with interests in so many places, it’s almost impossible not to get entangled with a bad person here and there. Try as you may, it’s going to happen from time to time.
