People who knew him said Monsignor Franklin M. Kelliher was serious about his role as a protector and role model to Buffalo

Born and raised in Holyoke, Mass., he took up boxing as a youngster and became one of New England’s top heavyweight amateur boxers in the 1920s.

He moved to Buffalo and became a priest in 1930. For several years after that, he also competed as a professional wrestler, wearing a black mask and calling himself “The Masked Marvel” when he performed in Buffalo, Toronto and other cities.

There are a number of these “scandal stories” and I don’t know if it is improper to post some or too many but this story is certainly very different than any others I have seen. For the record, I’ve read more coverage on topic from Buffalo but this story is unique.

That’s amazing, if I read this correctly, he at one time, wrestled while he was a priest.

This article calls to mind too, what I think is probably very well possible, policing those within the clergy, even if it amounts to spying, I’d think a little of that at least, must go on.

Is there a rule that priests aren’t allowed to wrestle? It was the 1930s, Depression era, he was probably trying to support hiimself and his ministry using the skills he had at his disposal.

And if he stopped some kids from being abused, so much the better.

Not seeing the scandal here, just an interesting story about a priest from the past.
