Call me crazy…tell me I’m “Livin’ on the Edge”…but I’d eat at a buffet any day; it’s all the same to me. Then again, I do drink my milk even when it’s waaaayyyyy past the expiration date, and leave my butter on the countertop overnight. :whacky:
You ARE living on the edge!😉
I have an irrational fear of sour milk, so if it is not well within the due date I let hubby do a sniff test first. I attribute it to some suppressed childhood trauma!

You are not alone!!! But I know the source of that trauma.

It was in elementary school after a Christmas concert. It was very hot and dry in the school and I was sooo thirsty after singing (off-key)…I begged my dad to buy me a chocolate milk from the vending machine in the hall.

I was imagining how cool and creamy it would feel going down my parched throat…

IT WAS SOUR!!! really sour:bigyikes:

I have never been able to “trust” milk products again, lol. Not only do I avoid anything that’s even near the expiry date, I also have hubby “test” anything before I have some.

Chinese buffets have become very popular 3-4 open in the last year in a 5 mile radius, but they all have a habit that bothers me, peel and eat shrimp in a container on ice next to fresh fruit and salads. Given that shrimp is notorious for carrying salmonella and other germs, not to mention I am highly allergic, that puts the whole salad/fruit bar off limits to me. When I worked at Stouffers chicken, shrimp and fish were all prepared and cooked in separate locations from each other and from all other products. Workers wore special hats, coats and gloves for these foods, and no utentsils, pans or cooks went from one work station to another. It is the only frozen dinner I trust because I know where they are made, what goes into them, and who makes them. They provide a lot of the food service buffet items you see, such as mac&cheese (worlds best) and lasagna.

I once went to a Japanese place that cooks the food on a big grill in front of you, as you are seated in parties of 8. I ordered chicken but others in the party ordered shrimp, and all was cooked on the same grill, I was in the emergency room inside an hour after eating.

:ehh:

I must join the camp of the neutrals, along with StephanieC. In fact, I may even join those who enjoy buffets-- once in a while.

I am possibly only a little biased because, first of all, we RARELY eat out because I love to cook. Also, I grew up as the oldest in a large family, so we couldn’t really go out conveniently.

My great-great-grandparents started a restaurant (that’s still in the family) that is famous for its smorgasboard-- AKA buffet. The food is very good, always strictly observed and discarded after safe amounts of time, kept hot, and, yes, even eaten in gross amounts (literally gross) by some people who show indiscretion at the “groannig board”.

We sometimes have family holiday gatherings there for the convenience of housing our large extended family with lots of travelers from long distances in the same room. We even had them cater our wedding luncheon!!!

At any rate, I don’t expect to change anyone’s mind, just throwing my 2 cents in…

A mention of Chinese Buffet as dinner on another thread leads me to ask the question… am I the only one who hates them? My hatred is not reserved for Buffets of Chinese food, but for the entire restaurant buffet idea.
What an unusual topic. Though very interesting and welcomed.
I, personally, totally agree with you, kage_ar. I think “buffets” are gluttenous, to say the least. Who needs to eat that much? And, yep the food is usually atrocious. But I also like home and church buffets. They’re homey. Also, I believe, “buffets” are a total “American thing”. Where the whole concept of “more is better” applies. More house, more hair, more toys, more car, more clothes, more credit, more consumption, more food. I say EEEEWWWW as well. So I’m with ya on this one!!!
P.S. One other thing I think is equally disgusting is taking a “doggie bag” home from a restaurant. What civilised folk would ever think of doing this?

carol marie:
I don’t like Buffets because then I have to play waitress. First I have to help all the kids get their food… then I have to go fetch the silverware. Then I get to watch them while my husband fills his plate. Finally it’s my turn - only when I get back one wants more maccaroni and cheese and the other dropped his fork. By the time I get to eat, everyone else is practically finished & ready to go.

No thanks. I can do that for free at home. :yup:
Hey know what ya mean! Been there done that SO many times.

I absolutely abhor buffets. I rarely eat out past partaking of an occasional lunch sub from Publix, so I can honestly say that I have avoided any dates with salmonella and heavens-knows-what-else. I am not a picky eater, but I am very cautious. Plus, I have a cleanliness fixation, but that is only because of my Anglican upbringing! 😉

And yes, I have actually known a colleague from work who died from eating chinese buffet food that had somehow been in contact with peanuts, with which he had a very severe allergy. He had not eaten the peanuts, but somehow his food had been touched with the oil, and so he died right in the restaurant! He was always careful with what he ate, yet somehow this one incident slipped by his notice. I wish I were making this up, but I am not. His death was tragic and unnecessary.

Whoa.

Well, I do, for one. I can not afford to waste food on those rare occasions when we enjoy a meal out. I never expected to have my status as a civilized person called into question as a result thereof. Please understand that I mean this in the nicest, least confrontational way possible, but I really do not appreciate being characterized as disgusting or uncivilized.

I don’t care to eat at Buffets. Just think about all those people breathing, not to mention anyone who has coughed or sneezed over and around the buffet table. Yuck! Plus, to me it’s quantity, not quality at a Buffet, so it’s not that great of a deal. There’s 2 right down the street from me, Barnhills and Golden Corral. Around here we have a special name for the buffets, as in Hey, do you want to go to lunch with us? Where are you going? The Hog Trough… No Thanks, I’ll pass! Used to go to a Chinese Buffet years ago. Hubby has a cast-iron stomach but nothing will take him down quicker than a Chinese Buffet, so we don’t go anymore!

Waste not, want not. I usually get two or three, sometimes more meals from an out-to-eat dinner. Otherwise going out is such a huge waste of food and money!

I proudly carry out a doggie bag whenever I go out, and I’ll judgementally shake my finger on my way out at anyone who lets the waiter take their food back to throw away. Go ahead, call me uncivilized… see if I care. I’ve been called much worse.

I totally agree. Why waste perfectly good food? Restaurant portions are so large I often have leftovers. Also, I’ve been known to take home an actual doggie bag on quite a few occasions - the steak scraps for example - for my dog. He gets very excited when he sees us walk in with a little white, good-smelling box!

This civilized gal does! I eat small portions, and always take the left overs home.

At our favorite homestyle Mexican place, we order the double fajitas - and can never eat the entire thing. We take home the wonderful mix of grilled beef, onions, peppers and tomatoes THEN the next morning mix it in with eggs for a wonderful breakfast!

Every day for lunch I have the left overs of dinner, either from home or eating out.

Maybe that is part of my buffett aversion - all that food and no leftovers 🙂

OK well–to each his own then. You’re allowed to do so. However, don’t forget we are each, as eveyone on here, entitled to our own opinions, and this is mine, all the same.

This is correct. There is a difference, though, in expressing a personal opinion that one does not care to take food home from restaurants, as opposed to making derogatory remarks about other people who do.

Yes, you’re right. Sorry. I surely did not mean anything personal towards anyone. May I re-phrase then? I feel it is absolutely disgusting to take food home in a doggie bag, and I don’t prefer to do so. Is this OK for me to state such?

Thanks for the reminder of proper etiquette. 🙂

There is a fabulous family style Italian restaurant that we love to frequent. We always order the “large” platters of spaghetti, chicken marsala, garlic mashed potatoes, etc. etc. We then pack up whatever is left and take it home. This then serves as lunches for us the next day (sometimes for 2 days, depending on how much food is left). We do the same thing with a Greek restaurant. Our bills for this is often around $100. We don’t waste the food!!

My kids’ teachers always comment on what my kids bring to school for lunch - chicken marsala, mousakka, lamb, etc.

YUM!!! I just was always taught this is not proper etiquette to take food home in a doggie bag. But now that I think of it, sounds good at least by your post above Catholic90. I guess some though will take home really gross stuff, like their leftover knawed on steak. EWWWWW. Guess once again, it comes down to a matter of manners and discretion, like with anything. 🙂

I wouldn’t take home some things, like a few bites of a steak, but I will take larger portions like I mentioned above. We also always take the bread (pita) that is served at the Greek restaurant, because by law they have to throw it out if we don’t eat it. That seems like such a waste, when my kids LOVE sandwiches made with pita bread.

I figure if we are paying $100 for a dinner for 5 of us and there are leftovers, we will take them and enjoy them for lunch! (especially with a 13 and 12 year old who eat ALL THE TIME!).😉

i worked at a buffet and my managers would always cringe when people over 200 pounds came in

i hate buffets they disgust me. who knows how long the food been there
