I thought the first three or four seasons were fun, but then like most Joss Whedon stuff it kind of lost steam after that. At least for me it did. Got too focused on angsty drama instead of comedy/horror like it was in the beginning. Though there were still some good episodes here and there. Same thing happened with Angel.
Around season 3 or 4 is also when they suddenly decided to re-write a character – who up till then only showed interest in men – into a lesbian, which didn’t make sense to me story-wise. Felt really forced. But that character was my favorite, so I pretty much just ignored it. I don’t remember anything explicit as far as the lesbian thing went, but if you don’t want to watch something with that, I recommend quitting the show after they graduate high school.

I’d recommend it. It has some really genuine emotional moments, and is very cleverly written.

It’s fantastic fun! But as Robyn P says, only the first three or four series are good, then it quickly gets a bit silly. There are still great episodes here or there, but I would say they aren’t worth sitting through the other stuff. Also it gets a bit depressing and loses its light touch.
I really recommend Angel too if you enjoy Buffy, it’s one of my all time favourites! It’s quickly finds its own charm and stands on its own, and provides some darkly fun tales. Although the fifth season is a bit hit or miss, I recommend all 5 seasons.

I found the show slumped in Season 4 but picked up again in Season 5 with a surprise unexpected mid-show “onscreen retcon” that shook it up a bit. I did feel it once again dropped off towards the end… But the last episode was worth watching.
Season 3 was the peak with the Buffy VS Faith dynamic, and I felt Season 4 struggled in it’s shadow. But Michelle Trachtenberg’s addition as “Buffy’s Sister” had the effect the writers intended and Season 5 was back in form.
Notably creator Joss Whedon intended that season finale(where Buffy dies) to be the last episode, but network convinced him and Sarah Michelle Gellar to sign to two more seasons. I read somewhere that he personally still feels it really ended with Buffy’s death and creating two more seasons for UPN was a mistake.
