has anyone seen the show? I just finished season 2 and I have mixed feelings I guess

is magic in the show the immoral kind? although I think the source is natural enough. i.e. it’s the mystical energy that exists in the world that anyone can learn to use. however, the way they practice it seems pretty occultish.

for the most part, it’s portrayed in a negative light so far, the only good thing I got out of it so far is the restoration of angel’s soul. and I know Willow does get pretty crazy because of it later on.

thoughts? is it glorifying something mmoral or would magic be part of the natural setting in this case?

It’s a television show. Enjoy it. I believe the first few seasons are spot on.

It’s fiction. It’s a good show; has its highs and lows like any other. But it’s fiction - enjoy the acting, observe the morals.

I enjoy this show. In many ways I think its quite moral. People who do bad things are punished. People who succumb to the temptations of power meet the consequences of their actions (you’ll see this in season 3 for instance). Willow of course later finds that magic can have devastating consequences.

I know, but my question was if the magic in this fictional world was the morally neutral kind. it’s a bit hard to tell

I was a big fan of the show when it was on. In hindsight, though, I don’t think it was such a healthy thing to be watching.

As far as the supernatural aspects of the show go, it is probably mostly harmless, as long as one understands that it is supposed to be strictly fantasy. Creator Joss Whedon once noted that because he doesn’t believe in anything supernatural (I assume he means God, too), he had a lot of freedom of imagination. However, other than crosses and holy water serving as vampire repellent, I don’t recall religion ever being portrayed positively on the show. In one episode, Buffy learns about a saint’s bones being venerated and says something like, “Note to self: Religion freaky.” Throughout the show, there are various monk-like figures who invariably turn out to be up to no good.

As the show went on, there were a few particular story arcs that were very sexual in nature, with some graphic scenes between Buffy and various boyfriends. I stopped watching for part of one season because it got very uncomfortable – I waited until I was sure that story arc had passed.

Also, Joss Whedon seems to be very much on board with advocating homosexuality, and this becomes a pretty prominent theme in the show.

One positive thing I would say about the show is that Joss Whedon is a brilliant storyteller. I always liked how a seemingly minor incident in one episode would be revealed to have been far more significant down the road. Whether he’d planned those things all along or just made them work as he went, I was never sure.

OTOH, God really plays no role in that imagined world, so the idea that magic of any kind would be evil, insofar as it it would be an attempt to undermine the natural order of creation, is never explored.

OTOH, God really plays no role in that imagined world, so the idea that magic of any kind would be evil, insofar as it it would be an attempt to undermine the natural order of creation, is never explored.

I’m wondering on the actual mechanism of it. for example, 'magic"" in our world would be sinful because it’s not like fictional magic, it always involves interactions with the fallen angels, whether the user knows it or not. there’s no genetic trait, or mystical energy, or supernatural force to give it an alternate explanation.

I’m wondering in buffy because they talk about it being from the mystical energy but some of the spells are calling on spirits and things like that

I was obsessed with this show back when in was really big. Take an episode from season 2 for example…angel turns evil again and he kills Giles girlfriend by just taking the heart right out of her while she sleeps! This is evil! And as the show goes on more spells are cast and more demons come into it.

no one the show claims these things weren’t evil. a show is not necessarily sinful if it portrays evil as evil
