Building Re-dedication During Mass

I recently attended a “charismatic” parish for Mass, the priest initiated the Mass outside due to the re-dedication and after the Penitential Rite he encouraged the faithful to prophesy out loud and pray over the land. He also seemed to be speaking in tounges during this re dedication. Should this have occured during Mass? Thank you for your responses!!
 
“to prophesy out loud”? about what? “speaking in tongues” - and what did he say?

It sounds fishy to me… Quite unlike a Catholic mass, for sure. Perhaps others with more experience in the charismatic section will post sg useful.

Nope. It should not have, but as is often the case with the charismatic movement these things happen and happen all too frequently. The early church fathers and later writers understood full well what the charisms were and were not and how they occurred. It was for those reasons that most spiritual writers, St. John of the Cross, for example, warned the faithful NOT TO SEEK such extraordinary gifts, as these were gifts from God to serve the Church, not to serve the individuals need. I believe that Vatican II made this warning part of its teaching on the charismatic gifts.

The fact that the Priest encouraged those present to prophesize on their own shows a complete lack of understanding of how the charisms have historically worked and been manifested.

The Holy Spirit I believe, bestows His graces on whomever He pleases and howsoever He pleases. It is not up to us to ask for them and expect that we should get them or be disappointed as so many are when they are not…
