Bulgarian Does Stand Next to Pope Shooter - Italian Expertise
2005-09-30
A special expertise carried out in Italy has proved that Bulgarian Sergey Antonov, suspected to have participated in the plot to kill John Paul II in 1981, was near the assassin of the pontiff at the time of the shooting.

Experts have studied photos from May 13, 1981 showing Ali Agca shooting at the Pope. They have concluded that Antonov is the eye-glassed person, who can be seen in the photos of the assassination attempt on the late Pope, Italian newspaper Il Gazzettino reported…"

"…The expertise was ordered by Mitrokhin Committee investigating any KGB spies in Italy.

Italian media resurrected earlier this year the so-called Bulgarian connection, claiming that Bulgarian classified documents contain evidence that the attack was planned by the Soviet KGB with participation of the secret service of the former East Germany - the Stasi - and its Bulgarian counterpart.

Many Italian sources have reportedly indicated that Stasi files confirmed the direct involvement of Soviet KGB in masterminding the assassination and coordinating the participation of erstwhile Bulgarian communist secret services. These, in turn, resorted to Turkish extremists as the actual executors of the plan.

Italy announced plans to reopen an inquiry into the 1981 attempted murder of Pope John Paul II and approached Bulgaria after it vowed to grant it access to classified documents."
