Bunk Beds

Does anyone have any advice on buying bunk beds? I thought it would be simple, but then I realized I have to watch out for weight limits, mattress size/weight, design… I don’t even know where to go to buy them (I am looking online because locally there don’t seem to be very many places, if any).

I am not sure where to start! I was hesitant to go this route, but we are considering buying a couple to free up some floor space. (single beds vs bunks, our kids don’t sleep on the floor 😉 ) and because my kids really really want bunk beds!
 
Just go to Ikea if there is one by your house. They have loads of bunk beds.
 
I know Walmart has a few, too.

Are they really that complicated? Most are just twins on top of each other. We are getting an old set from relatives later this summer (unbunked at first, to be bunked later.)
 
If you can, I suggest you build them, that way you can get them just how you want them and they will be nice and sturdy. 👍
 
If you really MUST. Have Bunk beds,
Then get the tubeular ones, made out of metal tube,
We bought bunk beds when our boys were little,for the same reason as yourself,
They were timber , the younger of the 2. Bashed his head on the edge of the timber, nearly knocked himself out,. We were really worried when we saw him on the floor,
So we dismantled it, never again, so stick with tube metal ,

I don’t know where my parents bought our bunk beds, but I’m pretty sure the weight limit is around 200lbs. We’ve never had an issue with it, even when a couple of us were having a “sleepover”. Even though my sister and I took ours down, my brothers and sisters all enjoy having bunk beds and the extra space it provides! 👍
 
Definitely consider the option of a bunk bed that can be separated into two singles.

We bought our two middle girls a bunk bed, which they liked at first, but over time didn’t like and wanted it as two singles - which we were able to do. They are much happier with two singles.

We had bunk beds, the kind that separated. They were good. Ours were pine, and were larger than a lot my friends had (they may not have been the kind that separated). I remember I visited my friends and I was shocked I could see the top of the top bed standing (I was under 5’!).

We used ours for years, as bunks, as singles, etc. We enjoyed them. They are nice when space is limited.
 
We have fallen foul of the mattress heights as we were given some mattresses to replace the original ones and they are much deeper than the first set. My kids are quite a bit older than when we first had the bunks, so I’m not really concerned about my older daughter in the top bunk, but I wouldn’t have been happy with anyone much younger up there.
 
Look at twin over double bunk with a trundle underneath. When needed, it can accomodate more sleepers. The double bed underneath is easier to sit on than normal bottom bunks. Trundles can either hold another mattress or store clothes, plus they look neater than what kids usually shove under their bed. There are also some styles with dressers in the stairs and/or sides of the bed.

I like these types as well. I also liked the ones that are shaped like a “t” One bed across the top of the other bed. I’ve seen cute ones where they even manage to fit a dresser or desk under the top bed and next to the bottom bed.

My sons have a little room, we were thinking bunk beds, but the oldest already had a bed which is in really good condition. We ended up just getting another twin bed,
 
My mom refused to get us bunk beds because she had known a boy who had gotten severe head injury falling from one. Our room was too small for two beds so she bought a daybed with a trundle underneath. When I was in college, I had a bunk bed with a desk underneath. I’ve seen them with the lower bunk that divides into a futon.
 
The amount of injuries from bunk beds is unreal. Just google the statistics. I briefly considered them for my daughters, but, in the end, decided against them because of some consistent complaints that:

a) Whoever is on top is going to get hot;
b) The top bunk is hard to make;
c) Injuries (my brother broke his arm falling from one when he was about 5).

Just food for thought….
