Burial at sea? Sending ashes into space?

Regarding proper interment of the deceased, is it okay to send someone’s ashes deep into space? There is a ‘New Horizons’ camera device being sent to Pluto with a scientist’s ashes aboard. I know it’s wrong to scatter ashes, but in this case they are apparently all together in one place – but moving at a million miles per day toward deep space.

Is this acceptable practice, or is there something special about being held in a designated place near a church or in a cemetery?
