Buried with Christ in Baptism?

I have heard it said that when we are Baptized we are buried with Christ or sealed in the Death of Christ. What does that mean?

I sort of understand the symbolism of Coming out of the water and that is like the resurrection, but how do we die in our baptism?

Do we die to self? Die to the world? or is it sometype of other death?

The language of death you’ve heard of originates in Scripture. Saint Paul spoke of baptism “into His death” by which are “buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:3-4).

We see in our baptism a definite communion with death–more specifically, Christ’s death–by which Jesus Christ wrought the salvific effects of our baptism.

This is reiterated in the Catechism.

• This sacrament is called Baptism, after the central rite by which it is carried out: to baptize (Greek baptizein) means to “plunge” or “immerse”; the “plunge” into the water symbolizes the catechumen’s burial into Christ’s death, from which he rises up by resurrection with him, as “a new creature” ([1214*Catechism of the Catholic Church * (Catechism of the Catholic Church - Paragraph # 1214)).
