I watched two EWTN programs this weekend on Belloc and Chesterton. The Incarnation was mentioned as being prefigured by the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-15).

I’d never thought of that before or heard of it described in that way.

Your comments?

Possible, though St Stephen in Acts refers to the Burning bush as simply being an angel, not God, though Exodus might be read that way.

Perhaps this has to do with the difficult conundrum that the Bible plainly says the Father dwells in unapproachable light but Adam, Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel and others seems to have experienced God up close and personal. Some have argued because of this that these pre-incarnate visions were in fact Christ before He had His body. For some I guess this solves the problem but I think it opens as many questions as it answers.

For example John tells us that before the incarnation the second person of the Trinity is the Logos. That it is this Logos by which God spoke the Creation into being. Surely if this Logos is fully God then He too also dwells in unapproachable light just as the Father does. There is clearly a sense of great fear and dread when God comes down at Sinai and the people fear to be slain by the Voice of God so to say that God could hit the dimmer when he chose to I think is problematic.

I think it is better to say that whatever it was Moses saw it was strange and has not been repeated, as such it is perhaps unhelpful to unscrute the inscrutable and we should therefore instead focus on what the text clearly means to teach; namely that God spoke to Moses and Moses’ commission was from the LORD on High.

In the same we too have also been a given a commission by the same LORD and just as Moses was fearful of the calling and yet obedient so we too are to take his example and be obedient even when it is hard, scary or difficult to the point of seeming impossible. Remember that just as the LORD reminded Moses that His arm had not grown short so neither has God the Spirit failed to give us all we need to fulfill that to which we have been called.

God Bless
