Burning smell after rosary prayer

Last night after praying the rosary in our bedroom, my husband and I both noticed a burning smell that was so strong that we went all around the house looking for the source, but couldn’t locate it. The smell was coming from the bedroom, but there was no source. It dissipated after some minutes, then we went to sleep.

I am in the middle of renewing my total consecration to Jesus through Mary according to St. Louis de Montfort. I go twice a month to the sacrament of reconciliation and often to daily Mass. I have also been receiving spiritual direction from a priest who is an exorcist and I had just prayed for him last night. But, I have prayed for him many times before and never had any weird smells or strange things. Could this be a manifestation of the devil’s hatred of the rosary?
 
Wow… I certainly believe it could be. You must be doing something right to have angered them so much!

No. The devil will not remain in a place where Mary is revered and her name invoked. Call an electrician and have your wiring checked.
And keep praying. Sprinkle with holy water if you are fearful, and be at peace.

Have you talked to your Spiritual Director about this? I definitely would, but at the same time, also call the electrician because this is more likely to be a electronic problem then demonic.

The source of that burning smell could be mundane and not something necessarily demonic. I smelled smoke one day right after I prayed the rosary.

After some investigation, it turned out to be the neighbors cooking on their grill. With the warmer weather people are coming out and doing the backyard grilling.
 
🤷 you never know. Keep persevering in prayer in any case…

I have been exposed to such events in my lay apostolate, especially when I am promoting Jesus Christ, evangelizing. At one time at a prayer meeting with Carmelite Nuns and lay people, the bathroom was flooded, disturbing the meeting. This happened several times at various places of prayer too coincidental to dismiss as a plumbing problem. At another time my Pastor attended a house of prayer in order to pray for a priest friend who was leaving the priesthood. While praying he experienced a sulfuric smell while in the chapel. He 😃 suspected his priest friends only to find out they weren’t guilty. I have encountered similar things, not only in smells, but the devil’s influence on some people. He is very real, and he hates all of us, and most of all God. We are in God’s care and he can not harm us, and he can even be afraid of us, especially when we receive Jesus in the Eucharist. The ones who should be very afraid are those who are not close to Jesus. He is also afraid of Mary, she is the Queen of Angels a position higher than his, and she has the power to control him and his activities, and she is united to Her Son. As was stated you are doing something very right! Keep it up:thumbsup:
 
It’s not superstitious, although there is a lot of superstition out there. It’s based on our Faith as revealed in the Gospels, just do some research, although if you have the faith, and I believe you have you can already understand, especially with your contact with a Priest exorcist. It is true avoid superstitious nonsense, but this is not the case.
 
I highly doubt it was demonic activity. Especially after you just finished praying the Rosary. Prayer drives away evil: it doesn’t make it manifest. The Church’s position on such matters is to ignore it and keep doing your normal thing unless it manifests itself again in a similar or more stronger and obvious manner. I know this because I have read many a book on the subject and have conversed with priests/exorcisms. Don’t worry. Just keep praying. I’d be more worried that something burned and caught fire in your house

Is any one of your neighbors burning anything? Sometimes I can smell my neighbors wood stove burning but it only lingers in one room or another.

As far as any supernatural events going on, its best to let it go and not take stock in it at all.
 
I don’t know on the supernatural side, but one time that happened to me and it turned out that a fly had gotten up into the light fixture. Our fixture uses small, very hot bulbs. The fly fried itself on the bulb. Nasty smell.
 
The cause, I realized just now, is a bit of grease on the stove that when heated makes a burning smell that travels down the hall toward the bedroom. :o

I appreciate the spiritual warfare stories about prayer and evangelization being attacked. Also, I just finished reading The Rite, about exorcism and listened to the interview of exorcist Fr. Gary Thomas by Patrick Coffin on Catholic Answers. There is nothing superstitious about being aware of the reality of demonic activity. It just wasn’t the case in this instance.

We were warned by our mentors when we began teaching NFP to expect interference from the enemy and indeed there have been problems with DVD players, speakers, etc.

Don’t give the enemy more power than he has. Focus on God and his goodness rather than walking in terror of evil. God will protect you. Enough silliness. Your stove top is not a spiritual battlefield. Neither is a DVD player. Trust God, keep doing the right thing, HAVE FAITH. You’ll be safe and fine.

Sure, I was quick to post a question here before discovering the cause to be mundane. That doesn’t mean that I don’t trust in God or that I am giving the enemy power. I do not have unhealthy fear nor am I dabbling in silliness.

I’m thankful for a sense of humor. 🙂
 
My observation over a great number of years has been that the devil was ever, or hardly ever mentioned in a conversation, or a sermon. It was mentioned in the Gospel readings, but that was it. It wasn’t mentioned to the extent that he was close to being put out of existence, not worthy of being mentioned, or just ignored. Lately Pope Francis mentions him frequently. The National Catholic Register printed an article “Confronting Evil at it’s Diabolical Core. This was discussed at the Rome Conference. Instruction about exorcism were given to l70 students from a wide variety of countries. This course was sponsored by the Congregation for the Clergy by the Sacerdos Institute, affiliated with the Legionaries of Christ and it’s lay apostolate, Regnum Christie. Fr. Aldo Buonaiuto, an Italian exorcist warned that Satanism, occultism, witchcraft, and sorcery are “a great problem that is growing in Europe”. Brazil is highly implicated. He said the devil attacks in subtle ways. The most prominent is in temptations, then there are the special influences, infestations, which is a little presence that goes further than temptations, and there is diabolical possession of one’s body. Father Trugui a native of Mexico said " that is very normal in Latin America to speak of the devil. “We believe in that figure not only as a theological reality but as a true person, existing in an invisible way.” Pope Francis, he added, is making the whole Church aware of the reality of the devil.”

It is true we must not empower the devil more than he is, but it is also very true that we must acknowledge the God-given power he has as an angel (although restricted by God). There are many subtle ways he is working in our “incredulous secular, and even pagan society” Christians with the eyes of Faith can detect these ways through discernment, a gift of the Holy Spirit.

We try to avoid the extremes, calling these beliefs silly, and at the same time to call a strange or misunderstood phenomenon the work of Satan, but not to exclude it either until investigation. There is a Latin expression that covers these thoughts, “In Medio via stat virtus” (I hope I spelled it right) meaning, “In the middle way is strength”
